Jimmy Garoppolo to C.J. Beathard: “Lead these guys.”
The San Francisco 49ers season took a big swing on one player. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a knee injury in the fourth quarter, and head coach Kyle Shanahan said after the game that the trainers think it is a torn ACL. Garoppolo will undergo an MRI on Monday when the team returns to Santa Clara, at which point they will know for sure.
Whatever the injury ends up officially being, Garoppolo is out indefinitely, and that means the backup quarterback gets the call. C.J. Beathard takes over as the starting quarterback, and Shanahan said the plan is to promote Nick Mullens from the practice squad to serve as his backup.
This is not Beathard’s first run as starting quarterback. The 49ers drafted him out of Iowa last year in the third round, and he replaced Brian Hoyer midway through the season. Beathard eventually lost his job Garoppolo, but he made five starts (plus the second half against Washington) before then. In that run, he completed 54.9 percent of his passes for 1,430 yards, with four touchdowns and six interceptions.
Beathard met with the media following the game and said he was ready to go. He met with Garoppolo and told the injured QB he is praying for him. Garoppolo told him, “Lead these guys.”
Fooch’s update: Kyle Shanahan was asked about C.J. Beathard taking over as starter and offered a vote of confidence —
“I got a lot of confidence in C.J. He got a lot of playing time last year, led us to our first win last year. Came in today, made a hell of a throw on that fourth down. No hesitation. CJ’s a gamer. Everyone in here has a ton of respect for CJ, how he handles himself. He’s a man out there, and he’s a very good quarterback, and I’m fortunate to have him.”
