Lions vs. Cowboys: Random Stats

A collection of random facts about the Lions vs. Cowboys history.

The Cowboys are America’s team like Chicken Pox is America’s disease. I don’t know where both came from and both make me itchy. Okay, I do know where it came from. The term “America’s Team” literally came from the Cowboy’s themselves in their own 1978 highlight video. The Cowboys are your friend that says he lost his virginity at 14 and says it “lasted for like three hours.” Let’s get to the history.

Once upon a time, Elvis Presley asked all the ladies of the world, Are You Lonesome tonight? On that same day, the world went and saw Swiss Family Robinson, and Kenneth Branagh, the bad guy from Wild Wild West, was born... Actually he was born the day before, but he was probably still in the hospital. Also, the Lions played the Cowboys for the first time.

It’s hard to believe that Jerry Jones AKA Shelly Marcone from The Last Boy Scout was just an 18-year-old boy when these two teams met for the first time way back in 1960. He watched the Lions win 23-14 that day, and then swore on the moon and the stars in the sky that he would some day hug Chris Christie in his press box, come hell or high water.

Since that first meeting, the Lions are 12-15 all time against the team football team equivalent to Abercrombie and Fitch stores. You’ll be happy to know that the Lions are 2-2 against the Cowboys in the last four games. You’ll be sad to know that the Lions haven’t won in Dallas since 2011. To the questions!!!

It’s Barry Sanders world and Emmitt Smith is just living in it. These two only went head-to-head three times in their careers. Barry rushed for 357 yards but never scored a rushing touchdown. Emmett rushed for 276 yards and five touchdowns. Still, the questions was who had more yards, so Barry wins and Emmitt doesn’t.

Who will ever forget Dez saying he could do all the things that Calvin could do before the two teams faced off in 2013? Calvin then went on finish with the second most receiving yards in a single game that day. Good times.

As far as totals, both have played exactly four games against the opposing team. Dez has caught 13 receptions for 187 yards and seven touchdowns against the Lions. Calvin Johnson caught 33 receptions for 522 yards and four touchdowns. You can see who’s better.

It’s funny you should mention this. I talked with former NFL Vice President of Officiating Dean Blandino about the infamous picked up flag that occurred in the 2014 playoffs. Now that you’ve seen my cheap plug for my other article that I put out today, go read it right here.
