Packers DL Muhammad Wilkerson likely done for season with ankle injury, per report

One of the Packers’ big free-agent additions will probably miss the rest of the season with a severe ankle injury.

Of the multiple injuries suffered by Green Bay Packers on Sunday, none appeared more serious than that to defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson’s. Packers head coach Mike McCarthy confirmed those suspensions, called the injury “significant” during his Monday press conference. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport added that Wilkerson underwent surgery last night and will likely miss the rest of the 2018 season.

One of the Packers’ biggest free-agent signings of the offseason, Wilkerson decided to sign with Green Bay in part due to the presence of new defensive coordinator Mike Pettine. The two worked together early in Wilkerson’s career with the New York Jets, and the defensive lineman hoped to reinvigorate his career after a disappointing 2017 campaign.

Instead, Wilkerson appears likely to enter next offseason facing even more uncertainty. He turns 29 in October and has seen his pressure and sack totals decline each of the last three seasons. At best, another prove-it deal awaits him in free agency.

With Wilkerson out, the Packers will turn to third-year defensive lineman Dean Lowry and former third-round pick Montravius Adams. Lowry has seen the most work of the two, receiving 24 snaps during Sunday’s tilt at Washington and 57 total since the start of the season. Adams, meanwhile, hasn’t seen more than six snaps from scrimmage in any game this season, though that projects to increase with Wilkerson’s absence.
