Rams-Chargers live gamethread II

After a relatively dominant first half, the Rams are only up a single possession.

The Los Angeles Rams served up a near perfect half offensively. All four drives were headed for touchdowns and they marched into position for a field goal as time expired in the first half.

And yet they accounted for only 14 points.

A fumble from RB Todd Gurley killed off the first drive and a misexecuted play between QB Jared Goff and TE Gerald Everett (I couldn’t tell whom of the two was more responsible for it) led to an interception taking two touchdowns off the board. K Sam Ficken missed his 46-yard field goal keeping things even closer. Had the Rams finished those drives to go with the special teams touchdown granted by LB Cory Littleton’s third punt block of his career, the scoreboard would reflect the Rams’ dominant performance that half.

Instead with QB Philip Rivers keeping the Chargers in it with a beautiful throw to WR Mike Williams for the first touchdown and a second drive lacking CB Marcus Peters who left with a lower leg injury, it’s just an eight-point game heading into the second half.

Still, you have to like where things were headed overall. I’d suggest that even with the interception, that was Goff’s best half of football in his NFL career. He had a handful of difficult throws to make and he made them all. With the offensive line playing wonderfully yet again, he took advantage of the middle of the field a couple of times when the defense allowed him to (even once using his feet to go into Giraffe Mode). But those tight window throws to WR Robert Woods and WR Brandin Cooks are the kind of throws that, given the level of difficulty, separate quarterbacks at this level.

If he keeps that up this half let alone beyond this game...look out.
