Shuffling rookie receivers.
The Buffalo Bills promoted rookie wide receiver Cam Phillips to their 53-man roster on Thursday, cutting another rookie in Robert Foster to complete the transaction. The move was first announced by Phillips’s agent.
Phillips was an undrafted free agent signing owing largely to an awful 4.79 forty yard dash at his Pro Day. The receiver missed the end of his senior season with a foot injury. Phillips is the all-time leading receiver at Virginia Tech, with 236 catches for 3027 yards and 17 touchdowns over his four year career. Not known as a deep threat, Phillips earned praise for his tenacity, especially running after the catch, and his abilities as a possession receiver.
With the Bills, Phillips started in the deepest reaches of the depth chart, but early chemistry with fellow rookie Josh Allen had him steadily moving upward through training camp. He was one of the most consistent playmakers during each practice. A groin injury was a setback, and Phillips only appeared in three preseason games with two catches for 12 yards.
Phillips replaces Foster, a speedster who struggled to finish at the catch point. In six games, Foster has nine targets, catching only two of them for 30 yards. After playing 36 percent of snaps in a heavy rotation from weeks 1-4, Foster’s time was cut dramatically in the last two weeks, with eight snaps against the Titans and two against the Texans.
