Browns’ offensive snap counts, stats, and PFF notes: Week 6

Baker Mayfield and the receivers have a day to forget, while Duke Johnson and David Njoku lead the team in offense.

Below, we analyze the snap counts and stats on offense for the Cleveland Browns’ Week 6 game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

• Baker Mayfield made some good throws that should have gone for touchdowns, and maybe that changes the tone of the game. But overall, he looked more like a rattled rookie on Sunday and never quite seemed to feel comfortable in the pocket or sensing where pressure was coming from. The ankle injury on a freak accident may have played a part in that.
• Per PFF, “Mayfield was pressured on 17 of 52 dropbacks (32.7%), going 3-of-11 passing for 25 yards, with two interceptions, five sacks, three throwaways, and a 0.0 passer rating.”

• Duke Johnson made the most of his time on dumpoff routes, logging a team-high 73 yards on 4 catches. I might get a little more excited if it weren’t for the fact that the game was a blowout in the opposition’s favor.
• Carlos Hyde had a season low in production, having 14 carries for 34 yards. Nick Chubb had his typical 3 carries per game, with one 19-yard run being his highlight.

• Even if the Browns struggled in a game, I didn’t think there would be a week where we would see a 2-catch, 10-yard type of performance out of Jarvis Landry. Not only that, he and Antonio Callaway combined to haul in just 4 catches on 19 targets. Callaway did have a two-point conversion.
• Cleveland was only three deep at the receiver position after Rod Streater fractured his neck (ouch!) earlier in the game. That is after already having been down Rashard Higgins and Derrick Willies. That allowed rookie Damien Ratley to get a ton of playing time out of no where — he played 88% of the snaps and had 6 catches for 85 yards.
• The thing I’ll remember most about this game is that the Browns’ three receivers basically could not make any clutch plays. Yes, maybe they were bang-bang type of catches. Maybe they were a tad high, or a tad far. But the receivers have to win some of those battles. I mean, come on, we’ve got the Chargers receiver making contested catches among three defenders.
• How bad are the drops? Let’s have PFF tell us:

The receiving group dropped four more passes on Sunday, some of which could have been touchdowns. Mayfield now leads the league in highest percentage of passes dropped at 9.8%, a full three percent above the next quarterback on the list, Blake Bortles at 6.8%.

• At least David Njoku caught a red zone touchdown. His utilization has seen an uptick with Baker Mayfield, but again, I just can’t get excited about anything from this game with how it played out.
• Seth DeValve only played one snap all game. One! Darren Fells (72.8) was the Browns’ second-highest graded player on offense on Sunday.

• The Browns allowed 5 sacks and 9 quarterback hits on Sunday.
• Per PFF, the Browns’ highest-graded offensive player on Sunday was RT Chris Hubbard (77.9). RG Kevin Zeitler (72.4) received the 3rd highest grade.
