DC Marquand Manuel addresses state of Falcons pass rush

It’s not a lot, but at least the team is acknowledging the issue.

The Atlanta Falcons have a pass rush. It’s not much of a pass rush, but it’s one all the same.

DE Takkarist McKinley is in the midst of a breakout season and has been just swell. DT Grady Jarrett is always a stalwart interior rusher, and DTs Jack Crawford and Deadrin Senat have also flashed tons of potential this season. DE Brooks Reed is also decent.

Other than that, though? It’s not great.

This week, Falcons DC Marquand Manuel addressed the difficult subject at hand, not saying a ton but saying the key word to comment on the issue.

Consistency is the buzzword that needs more play with this group. McKinley is good, but he can’t do it by himself. At times, this unit will flash, but at other times, it goes silent. They’ve got to be more consistent as an overall unit to make the highs the norm. Otherwise, this group is poised for a bit of an overhaul in the offseason.

We’ve talked at length about Vic Beasley and his struggles, so we won’t harp on the fourth-year player other than to say he’s, of course, got to be more consistent himself. He flashes every now and again, and then he’ll vanish. No doubt Beasley is well aware of this and will work to improve that, starting this week against the Giants.

And Manuel’s right. Getting Jarrett and Derrick Shelby back will be important, though Shelby is known more as a run-stopping edge.

The G-men OL isn’t super-amazing, so the team has a chance to turn on the fireworks this week if they want to. Maybe this could be the team’s first consistent defensive line performance of the year? We’ll see once Monday night rolls around.
