Get excited Bills fans, there’s a new sheriff in town!
After losing to the Houston Texans by a trademark Nathan Peterman interception, the Buffalo Bills travel to Indianapolis to take on the 1-5 Colts. With an elbow injury sidelining Josh Allen for the foreseeable future, the Bills turn to veteran quarterback, Derek Anderson. He, along with the rest of the players on this list, will factor in to whether the Bills bounce back or head into Monday Night Football at a cool 2-5.
QB Derek Anderson
A seasoned veteran, some would say, who hasn't thrown a touchdown in a regular season game since Week four of the 2016 season. But he has to be better than Peterman right? For Sean McDermott’s sake, I hope so. Anderson had 16 days to learn a new playbook and less than a full week of work with the starters in practice to get some sort of timing down. The good news? The Colts have a terrible defense. They rank 26th in passing yards allowed and give up an average of 30 points per game. Anderson doesn't have to turn into Peyton Manning for the Bills to have a shot but he needs to be better than... you know.
RB LeSean McCoy
McCoy has yet to break 100 yards on the ground and this week might be the best chance up to this point. The Colts give up an average of 106 yards a game on the ground and that’s with teams getting into air raid battles with them. McCoy also hasn't been able to find the end zone through his first five games and I think there is a good possibility that changes tomorrow. For a team without much offensive talent, McCoy is still by far the best offensive player on the Bills roster.
WR Kelvin Benjamin
Everyone is sick of Benjamin and for good reason but this week could be different. From when Benjamin was drafted in 2014 to the Carolina Panthers, Derek Anderson was his teammate until Benjamin was traded before the deadline of the 2017 season. They do have a little bit of chemistry and Benjamin played well when Anderson was throwing him the ball. I’m sure their time together will be limited, but the Colts defense is a favorable matchup to rekindle this old flame.
DE Jerry Hughes
A revenge game is upon us! Hughes is a feisty individual and he was not fond that the Colts wrote him off so quickly by trading him to the Bills in the 2013 offseason. This will be the third time that Hughes will face his old team, the first being in 2015 when the Bills beat the Colts in the season opener 27-14 and the second being the Snowvertime last season. Hughes is off to a great start through six games with four and a half sacks and three forced fumbles. The amount of total pressures he has put on opposing quarterbacks is near the top in the NFL as well. The Colts average a whopping 48 pass attempts per game this season and Hughes will have a lot of opportunities to make some noise in the backfield.
CB Taron Johnson
Out of a long list of defensive players for the Bills that have been playing lights out, an argument could be made that Johnson has been the best of them all. A nickel corner is vital to NFL defenses in the modern age of football and Johnson has proven through the first six games that he can compete with the best of the best. He recognizes routes quickly, he comes up in run support and he is a cerebral player. Johnson could face a challenge this week with Colts’ receiver T.Y. Hilton returning from injury. Hilton is their number one receiver but he can line up anywhere on the field, including the slot. That matchup is something to watch for during the game.
