Jets Place OLB Josh Martin On IR, Promote DE Bronson Kaufasi From Practice Squad

In his first game back from a concussion, Jets outside linebacker Josh Martin suffered another concussion and has been placed on the injured reserve list by the New York Jets. Two concussions in short succession are worrisome for Martin. We’ll have to see if he can bounce back from this, but for his health’s sake it may be time to begin to explore options other than playing football.

The Jets replaced Martin on the 53 man roster by promoting Bronson Kaufasi from the practice squad. Kaufasi is a 6’ 6”, 280 pound defensive end out of Brigham Young University. He was originally selected by the Baltimore Ravens with the 70th overall pick in the 3rd round of the 2016 NFL draft. Kaufasi spent the 2016 season on the Ravens’ injured reserve list, then played in three games for the Ravens in 2017, recording four tackles. He was cut by the Ravens on September 1, 2018 and the Jets then signed Kaufasi to their practice squad.

Kaufasi put up big pass rush numbers at BYU, with 26.5 career sacks, including 11 in a senior year that included 20 tackles for loss. He is something of a tweener, too big to play linebacker, but lacking bulk to play defensive line in the NFL. Perhaps he can add something to the Jets pass rush.

The Jets replaced Kaufasi on the practice squad by signing former Patriots linebacker Harvey Langi. Langi is a 26 year old, 6’ 2”, 250 pound linebacker out of Brigham Young University. Langi went undrafted in the 2017 NFL draft and was signed as an undrafted free agent by the New England Patriots. He appeared in one game for the Patriots in 2017 and did not record a stat. His 2017 season came to an end on October 13, 2017 when Langi was rear-ended at a stop light. Langi was placed on the non-football injury list with head and neck injuries for the remainder of the 2017 NFL season.

Langi suffered another injury in Patriots training camp this year and the Patriots decided to let him go.
