Everyone is praising the Lions this Wednesday morning.
The Detroit Lions haven’t even made the move official yet, but the team is already earning a ton of praise for their decision to send a fifth-round pick to the New York Giants for nose tackle Damon Harrison Sr. From fans to analysts to players, Twitter was abuzz Wednesday morning with near-unanimous praise for the Detroit Lions. Here’s just a small look at what they’re saying about the trade.
National Analysts
From Rotoworld’s Evan Silva:
Helps shore up huge weakness & #Lions get Snacks under contract for age-30 & age-31 seasons too. Acquiring proven quality talent for extreme low-probability day-3 picks is a market inefficiency smart teams are exploiting. https://t.co/AYEp8CtqGt

ESPN’s Mike Clay:
Wow. Great move for the Lions. Harrison is a stud. https://t.co/Pisp0ygsFr

Pats Pulpit’s Brian Phillips:
Don’t look now, but the #Lions now have 3 of PFF’s top-13 highest-graded IDL in football. https://t.co/4QcTGvw5go

Pro Football Weekly’s Eric Edholm:
Seems cheap.
— Eric Edholm (@Eric_Edholm) October 24, 2018
Lions, Giants had joint training camp practices two months ago, Lions must have liked what they saw https://t.co/WP1hkmj0h6
The Scout Academy’s Brandon Thorn:
The Lions run D (30th overall) has been painful to watch this season. Trading a 5th for a top-shelf NT like Snacks is probably the best single move they could have done to address that. A-gaps are solidifed and LBs will be more free to roam.
— Brandon Thorn (@VeteranScout) October 24, 2018
Just take a moment to breathe that last one in. “Probably the best single move they could have done” to address their biggest need. I’m sweating right now.
NFL players
No one knows the kind of player Harrison is than the players that share a league with him. A few players, past and present, offered their thoughts on the trade, all of them positive for the Lions.
First, there’s former Lions and Giants offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz, who never actually played with Harrison, but certainly knows him well:
Wow!!!! This is a steal for the Lions! Good for them. https://t.co/lXPdNxiOwW
— Geoff Schwartz (@geoffschwartz) October 24, 2018
Although Schwartz does admit that getting more than a fifth-round pick for Harrison was unlikely for the Giants.
Former Lions defensive end Lawrence Jackson is a big fan of the move:
Love the trade. I think it’s brilliant. He’s going to open up the linebackers. The mike linebacker will have more energy for more important things... https://t.co/nkx8zXgg48
— Lawrence Jackson (@LoJackson94) October 24, 2018
Meanwhile, Harrison’s former—and now current—teammate Devon Kennard is thrilled:
Let’s go @snacks !!!!
— DK (@DevonKennard) October 24, 2018
Harrison’s now former teammate, safety Landon Collins, is not happy:

Local reaction
First, let’s give Lions Wire’s Jeff Risdon a shoutout. Hours prior to Adam Schefter breaking the news about the trade, Risdon listed Snacks as a dream scenario for the Lions at the trade deadline.
“Harrison is an ideal interior lineman for any defense, but his scheme versatility and exceptional consistency in snuffing out the between-the-tackles run is even more tantalizing for Detroit. “Snacks” is exactly what the Lions need on the defensive line. He’s also an intelligent and personable teammate who never takes a play off.”
As for Lions play-by-play radio announcer Dan Miller? Yeah, he’s pretty stoked:
Serious question. And look, we will see how this works out. But when was the last time the Lions made a trade that seemed like the exact deal they needed for the right price and you said "Oh, &%$ yeah"? Cuz that's where I am with this one.
— Dan Miller (@DanMillerFox2) October 24, 2018
The Lions beat thinks it’s a pretty darn good move, too:
None. Gave up an extra fifth-rounder to immediately address the biggest weakness on an already improving defense, and did so with a player who hasn’t missed a game since 2012. It’s a big win all around. https://t.co/gLSC5l7tGV

Harrison's an elite run defender, so I assume he'll be the nose on early downs, with Hand or Hand/Robinson/Francois alongside him, depending on formation. Then off the field in passing situations.

Sylvester Williams is probably the guy getting squeezed out. https://t.co/NO7zMWjIWS
