Lions notes: Michigan-Michigan State is full of NFL prospects

Lions scouts are in attendance - who are some of the prospects to keep an eye out for?

With the highly anticipated Michigan versus Michigan State football game happening this weekend, NFL teams are preparing themselves for the future. A plethora of scouts will be in attendance, including the Detroit Lions:

This game will be brimming with NFL talent. The Lions will surely be interested in the front seven for each team. The Wolverines are headlined by defensive lineman Rashan Gary and edge rusher Chase Winovich. Both could be early round targets for the Lions if they opt to go local. Elsewhere on defense, Michigan boasts defensive tackle Bryan Mone, linebacker Devin Bush, cornerback Lavert Hill and safety Khaleke Hudson.

Michigan State’s defense features defensive tackle Raequan Williams, linebacker Joe Bachie, cornerback Justin Layne and safety David Dowell.

While the Lions might not be interested in early-round offensive players, this game does feature some prospects with mid-to-late round potential. At quarterback, Michigan’s Shea Patterson and Michigan State’s Brian Lewerke could be developmental quarterbacks for the Lions to target. Running backs Karan Higdon (Michigan) and LJ Scott (Michigan State) could have a future in the NFL, though maybe not with the Lions. Michigan State’s Felton Davis headlines the receivers, and tight ends Zach Gentry for Michigan and Matt Sokol for Michigan State are both NFL-caliber prospects. On the offensive line, Michigan’s Ben Bredeson and Michigan State’s David Beedle are decent guard prospects.

  • Matt Patricia sat down with Dan Miller to discuss the Dolphins. The head coach highlights the big-play ability of running back Kenyan Drake, the skill set of their wide receivers, and some their defensive stars:

  • The Lions last played the Dolphins in 2014, resulting in a 20-16 win. The highlight of the game, however, was some trickery pulled by Sam Martin:

  • Ricky Jean Francois, owner of 30 Dunkin’ Donuts, sent a gift to Miami Herald reporters this week:

  • Speaking of Francois, he and Nevin Lawson will be playing a football game in Miami for the first time since high school:

  • The Iowa Hawkeyes announced that former Lions head coach Jim Caldwell will be an honorary captain this week. Caldwell was a defensive back for Iowa from 1973 to 1976, and was a graduate assistant in 1977.

  • The Phinsider runs a weekly caption contest. This week’s image features none other than Matt Patricia. Have some fun, but try to be positive.
