Where do the Redskins rank going into Week 7 of the 2018 season?
The Redskins took first place in the NFC East back after the Eagles briefly took the top spot by beating the hapless Giants on Thursday night. Beating the Panthers after get smashed by the Saints was almost expected at this point of our roller coaster season. The Redskins host the NFL’s only other true roller coaster team this week, the hated Dallas Cowboys. One of the W-L-W-L flip-floppers will break that pattern this week, and we’re all hoping it’s the good guys.
The Redskins continue to confuse everyone this season with their hot/cold streak. The Panthers win moved them up in a lot of rankings, but their average has returned to their season high from two weeks ago. Getting two wins in a row, and a win over a division rival right behind them in the standings will answer a lot of questions. A loss drops them back into the WTF is this team category.

Can anybody make sense of this team? Beat Cam Newton and Aaron Rodgers at home but also get sliced up by Drew Brees and a mediocre Colts team. Alex Smith and company are incredibly still in the driver’s seat in the NFC East going into that game against Dallas next week. Last Week: 16
After beating Carolina, they’re in first place in the NFC East. If they lose at home to Dallas, they’ll fall out of first place. Last Week: 18

Will the real Redskins please stand up or sit down? Jay Gruden is good at pushing his players’ buttons, that’s for sure, but it shouldn’t take bad losses to prompt positive play. Last Week: 15

Jay Gruden’s club was coming off a short week following that lopsided Monday night setback at New Orleans. And the Redskins had dropped five straight to the Carolina Panthers dating back to ‘09. But Washington got out of the gates fast with a pair of first-quarter touchdown passes from Alex Smith to Vernon Davis and Paul Richardson, respectively, and would wind up taking an early 14-0 lead. The club would settle for three field goals the rest of the afternoon but that was still enough to hold off a Carolina team that made things interesting in the fourth quarter. It was a huge bounce back win and put the club back atop the NFC East…for now. Last Week: 14

If we told you, fresh off a beatdown in New Orleans, that the Washington Redskins would host the Carolina Panthers without tailback Chris Thompson and wideout Jamison Crowder and fail to reach 300 yards of total offense in a game in which Alex Smith passed for all of 163 yards, your first question would likely be along the lines of, “Did they lose by 20?”
All of that happened in Week 6—except the part where the Redskins lose. Instead, Washington jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead and held off a sloppy Panthers team to move to 3-2 and become the only team in the NFC East with a winning record.
These Redskins are hard to figure out. They’ve beaten a pair of good teams in the Packers and Panthers and dominated the Cardinals. But they also got flattened by the Saints and gave the Colts their only win of the season.
For now, we’ll go with a skeptical respect of Washington (or skeptispect, if you will) ahead of next week’s NFC East showdown with the suddenly surging Cowboys. Last Week: 15
Washington had a +3 turnover differential and still almost managed to lose to Carolina. Not exactly the most impressive outing in that regard. Last Week: 18
Of all the teams in sole possession of first place in the NFL through six weeks, the Redskins might be the one most people couldn’t name. But it’s true, they’re all alone in first place of the NFC East. A home game against the Cowboys on Sunday afternoon will go a long way in determining if they’re going to remain in the division race all season. Last Week: 15

The Redskins have been unbelievably mediocre for far too long. They might not see a better shot at winning the NFC East than this season for a long time. Last Week: 17

Playoff chances: 25.6 percent. Alex Smith hasn’t been able to connect with his wide receivers so far. Washington WRs rank last in targets and yards per catch and 31st in receptions and receiving yards. No Redskins wide receiver has even caught five passes or eclipsed 70 yards in a game yet this season. Last Week: 17
An answer. That’s what Sunday’s win over the Panthers was. That’s what the late stand against the Carolina offense was, after the Panthers had fought back from a 17-zip deficit. The coverage, in particular, held up -- something that had been the glaring issue in the “Monday Night Football” debacle (torching) in New Orleans. A big assist to the defense came from the offensive backfield, namely Adrian Peterson. The guy nobody seemed to want (in fantasy or reality) pounded the rock repeatedly into the teeth of the Panthers’ front, utilizing his typical hard cuts before lowering his head to grind out 97 yards on 17 carries. As a team, Washington ran 28 times for 132. That’s how teammates help out their tired pass rushers and defensive backs. Last Week: 18
