Is there anything to the chatter about this? The view here is, hopefully not
In the last 24 hours, two NFL writers whose work I respect have floated the idea of the New York Giants engineering a trade for Indianapolis Colts backup quarterback Jacoby Brissett.
First, it was Paul Schwartz of the New York Post:
This is a 24-year-old who, at 6-foot-4 and 235 pounds, has the skill set to thrive in the modern NFL offensive circus. Bill Parcells loved him when Brissett came out of North Carolina State. There were some in the Giants organization who were also high on him, with evaluations such as “he has everything you’re looking for in an NFL quarterback of today” and lauding his ability to throw a great deal of passes without turning the ball over.
Perhaps Brissett develops into a bona fide NFL starter. Adding him diminishes the pressure to absolutely, positively take a quarterback in the first round in 2019. Even if the Giants are able to land Justin Herbert of Oregon, Brissett would be a valuable placeholder. Something to think about.
Then, former NFL scout, ESPN analyst and current host of the ‘Locked on NFL’ podcast Matt Williamson weighed in for Clayton Football [Subscriber only]:
Now this is a move that has not been rumored or speculated, but the Giants absolutely should be on the phone with the Colts about Brissett. New York can’t move next year’s first rounder, because it is too valuable. But the Colts should be very interested in that second rounder that very well could end up being a top 35 pick overall. Andrew Luck is certainly rounding back into shape and Indianapolis needs as many future picks they can get. Maybe even a lesser offer pries Brissett out of Indianapolis.
Brissett has learned his craft from Tom Brady and now Andrew Luck and absolutely has starting traits. He faired well last year in Indianapolis with Luck out of the lineup, but fizzled out as the season went along with very little help around him. Brissett’s situation was so bad last year that he rarely had the opportunity to drive the ball down the field, one of his best skills. Brissett’s touch and ball placement are also vastly underrated. Brissett values the football without sacrificing the ability to make big plays and take chances. His pocket presence needs works, but there is a lot to work with here. Brissett’s contract status would have him under a very cheap contract through the 2019 season, which is plenty of time to analyze him.
He could be the long-term answer in New York. The Giants could acquire Brissett, get him prepared as quickly as possible, insert him into the lineup and evaluate him for the remainder of the 2018 season. If Brissett doesn’t excel, the Giants can still look at a quarterback at the top of next year’s draft. This is the perfect guy for New York to look at adding right now.
Valentine’s View
I’m not feeling this one.
Indications I’ve been given are that the Colts would like at least a second-round pick in exchange for Brissett. I simply can’t support the idea of a team with as many holes as the Giants have, and already being without a 2019 third-round pick, trading away another top pick for a “maybe” at quarterback.
The Giants need to try to make this work with Eli Manning. If it’s not going to, or the season, gets completely out of hand, they need to give Kyle Lauletta some snaps and find out about him.
If you need to find a new quarterback in 2019 use the draft or free agency. Don’t go surrendering picks right now just to take a flier on a possibility.
Besides, how many times have we seen teams end up with buyers remorse when they go out and make big trades for backup quarterbacks or sign them to mega-deals? There are a whole lot more Matt Cassel’s and Brock Osweiler’s out there than Jimmy Garappolo’s.
