The rookie running back is finally getting some national attention.
After Sunday’s breakout performance, Detroit Lions running back Kerryon Johnson now ranks second in the NFL in yards per carry among running backs (6.4) and ninth in rushing yards (444). He’s now grabbed national attention after scorching the Dolphins, and that has translated into Vegas odds.
According to Bovada.LV, Johnson now has the fourth best odds for the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year award. Here’s a look at the top seven and their corresponding odds:
Baker Mayfield: 11/10
Saquon Barkley: 3/2
Sam Darnold: 7/1
Kerryon Johnson: 16/1
Calvin Ridley: 20/1
Nick Chubb: 25/1
Michael Gallup: 25/1
Johnson clearly experienced a huge jump in odds after his 158-yard performance last Sunday. Last week, he had just 33/1 odds for the postseason honor.
It’s no surprise that Johnson has two rookie quarterbacks ahead of him as they tend to dominate postseason honors like this. As for Barkley, it’ll be interesting to see how the odds shake out for the rest of the year. The big difference between Barkley and Johnson is yards and touchdowns. Here are their stats side-by-side:
Johnson: 69 rushes, 444 yards (6.4 YPC), 1 TD; 15 catches, 89 yards
Barkley: 98 rushes, 481 yards (4.9 YPC), 5 TDs; 49 catches, 424 yards, 2 TDs
As you can see, Barkley is getting way more opportunities than Johnson and that has obviously led to much bigger overall stats, especially in the passing game. That’s likely to keep him ahead of Johnson for the foreseeable future in the Offensive Rookie of the Year race.
