Raiders looking to move some veterans at the trade deadline ‘you never know who’s gonna call’

If there’s one thing Gruden has proven since he’s taken over as the Raiders head coach it’s his eagerness to make trades. He made every kind of trade during the draft including moving up and down in the rounds, trading picks for players, and players for players. Since then he’s been trading players for picks left and right. And he’s not done yet.

The Raiders already have three first round picks in 2019 and two in 2020 from the trades of top picks Khalil Mack and Amari Cooper. And top pick Karl Joseph has also been rumored to be on the block.

The latest report has the Raiders shopping veterans Bruce Irvin and Rashaan Melvin, basically for whatever they can get. As NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero explains it, he is available for a late round draft pick.

Irvin saw just 24 snaps Sunday against the Colts. He has not been a full time player for the Raiders this season and has been mostly a non-factor in his new role as a full time defensive end. He performed better as a pass rushing outside linebacker in previous seasons so a team looking for one could see the value in acquiring him for the stretch run.

Melvin was added this offseason on a one-year deal and seems to have fallen out of favor at a deep position. He was inactive on Sunday in favor of Gareon Conley and Gruden favorite Daryl Worley. Melvin being inactive could be in part because of a tweet he put out about going back to his old playing style, that seemed to draw the ire of Gruden.

Karl Joseph saw some playing time last week now that he’s healthy again. The Raiders need help at safety and whether he is moved will depend on whether other teams would be willing to part with a valuable enough draft pick.

“I’m not on the phone calling around for trades, but you never who’s gonna call,” Gruden Monday. “You know, you never know who’s gonna call, or what the call will entail, but the deadline is looming and it can’t get here soon enough.”

Tuesday is the NFL trade deadline, so these deals must happen by then if they are to happen at all.
