Ravens News 10/20: Week 7 preview, John Brown receiving more attention, how to stop Drew Brees and more!

To the Ravens news...

Eisenberg: So How ARE You Going to Slow Down Drew Brees? - Baltimore Ravens

Brees, the New Orleans Saints’ first-ballot Hall of Famer-in-waiting, hits the ground less than just about any NFL quarterback. He has been sacked eight times in five games this season.

Aside from his line’s effective protection, Brees gets rid of the ball quickly – a strategy that worked for Cincinnati’s Andy Dalton against the Ravens in Week 2. According to NextGen Stats, Brees releases the ball in 2.52 seconds on average, faster than every quarterback in the league except Sam Bradford.

This doesn’t mean the Ravens have no shot at sacking Brees in Sunday’s heavyweight matchup of the NFL’s top-rated defense and top-rated offense. But it’s a good bet the Ravens’ defense will need to rely mostly on something other than sacks to limit Brees.

In league of its own, Ravens’ defense is now ‘chasing history’ - ESPN

The Ravens rank No. 1 in yards allowed, giving up 35.7 yards per game fewer than any other defense in the league. Baltimore is No. 1 in scoring defense, allowing 12.8 points per game while no one else is holding teams under 17 points.

The title of the NFL’s best defense through six games unquestionably goes to the Ravens. Statistically, Baltimore is in a class of its own.

The Ravens, though, have bigger goals in mind.

”We’re chasing history right now,” cornerback Brandon Carr said. “We’re not looking around at the other 31 teams. We’re looking at all the greats from when the league was first established until now.”

A sign of respect’: Baltimore Ravens’ John Brown says attention from defenses is vindicating - PennLive

Brown noticed extra defenders sliding toward his side of the field play after play in recent games. The attention sapped him of opportunities to catch deep passes and stunted a statistical hot streak.

A lack of space can grow irritating, sure, but Brown said he doesn’t mind. After listening to doubters during his underwhelming final two years with the Arizona Cardinals, he views the defensive gameplans as a compliment of the highest order.

”I take it as a sign of respect,” Brown said, “but at the end of the day, If I was [a Ravens opponent], I wouldn’t do that. It opens it up for my teammates.”

And Brown’s happy to leave other receivers with more room to work -- so long as they make defenses pay.

NFL Week 7 FOX New Orleans Saints @ Baltimore Ravens Preview - PFF

Flacco looking deep more often

Joe Flacco has attempted deep passes (20+ yards downfield) on 14% of attempts this season, his highest rate since 2013. However, despite the higher rate of attempts, Flacco’s passer rating on those deep passes is only 70.8, which ranks 27th among quarterbacks this season.

Ravens’ running backs going nowhere

The Ravens running backs have had trouble creating yards after contact this season. Their 2.27 yards after contact as a group ranks as the 3rd-lowest in the NFL, below the league average of 2.73.
