Atlanta Falcons fantasy stud and dud from Week 10

A brand new fantasy dud, and the second ever player who’s been named fantasy stud multiple times.

The Falcons came out lethargic and spoiled this week, expecting to get a win based on reputation alone because they were playing “just the Browns.” As a result, they walked out of Cleveland licking their wounds after suffering a blow to their playoff hopes.

We have a lot of great content analyzing the game here at The Falcoholic, but in this article, we’ll look at things strictly from a fantasy football perspective. Let’s look at Atlanta’s top fantasy performer and biggest fantasy disappointment from Week 10’s defeat against the Cleveland Browns.

Fantasy Stud/Dud 2018 History:

Past Studs: Matt Ryan (4), Julio Jones (1), Calvin Ridley (1), Mohamed Sanu (1), Giorgio Tavecchio (1)

Past Duds: Mohamed Sanu (3), Atlanta D/ST (2), Devonta Freeman (1), Austin Hooper (1), Tevin Coleman (1)

Stud - Julio Jones

Stat Line: 7 catches, 107 receiving yards, 1 receiving touchdown: 16.7 standard league points, 23.7 PPR points

A lot of Atlanta’s skill position players struggled against a Browns defense which dominated the trenches, but Julio Jones went out there and had a typical Julio Jones day, which is to say that he was very good.

Jones became the fastest receiver to ever reach 10K receiving yards on Atlanta’s third drive of the game. He then capped off that same drive with a beautifully designed one-yard touchdown catch where he caught a screen pass in a trips left formation — his second TD in as many weeks.

Jones would go on to surpass 100 receiving yards in a game for the sixth time this season and for the fourth straight time. He currently leads the league with 1040 receiving yards and is the WR7 in all of fantasy football.

Dud

Calvin Ridley: 3 catches, 37 receiving yards: 3.7 standard league points, 6.7 PPR points

The obvious candidate for this one is Mohamed Sanu, after he lost a fumble which really cost the Falcons in the second half. However, the fact that Sanu had six catches to Ridley’s three and 47 yards to Ridley’s 37, saves him from being named the fantasy dud for a third straight game. The catches contributing to PPR leagues was the difference in determining this week’s dud.

Ridley was the biggest victim in Atlanta’s offensive struggles. Matt Ryan did throw for 330 yards, but Julio ate up a good chunk of those yards in the receiving game, and Austin Hooper was targeted over and over again as Ryan’s safety blanket over the middle of the field.

As a result, Ridley had the fewest catches among Atlanta’s fantasy relevant players, and his 37 receiving yards with no scores weren’t enough to help anyone win any fantasy games.

In the end, Ridley is still a rookie so these types of performances aren’t anything to worry about. You have to take the good with the bad.
