Down by 14 midway through the fourth quarter, the Raiders were still clinging to hopes they could get something going and make their game against the Chargers Sunday interesting. It all came down to 4th and 5 at the Chargers’ 19-yard-line with 4:13 remaining.
The Raiders called a timeout to make sure they had the best shot at it. After all, make it they have a chance. Don’t make it and it’s game over.

The play was a screen to Jalen Richard. Derek Carr takes the snap out of the shotgun, Richard gets tripped up a bit but gets through, only to have a defender there to cover him. Melvin Ingram gets around Brandon Parker to rush Carr’s throw and Carr throws it into the turf. The absolute last thing that should happen there because there’s nothing to lose in taking a chance.
Playing it safe wasn’t an option. But according to Derek Carr there were no options.
“No, with the look they gave us, Jalen is the guy,” said Carr. “We’ve seen it on film work against them a whole bunch of times. We just didn’t get it.”
But what about trying to scramble for it?
“I would have definitely got sacked by 54 (Melvin Ingram),” Carr responded. “But I wish, absolutely, yes. We could have ha something different to pick that first down. It hurt.”
What about just taking a shot anyway?
“Well, I wish I could tell you all about that play. But no, not in that case. There’s literally... it’s Jalen. The coverage they play and everything, the way we designed it — it’s Jalen. I wish there was something else I could have done. . . We’ll talk about that this week. It’s really designed for Jalen and they covered it.”
It seems as if Carr is desperately trying to bit his tongue that it was not the most well-designed play. Head coach Jon Gruden, of course, took the blame.
“We tried for a big play. It was a play designed for man-to-man, we were trying to generate a pick for our half back. Give credit to San Diego (Los Angeles), they made a great play. We were looking for a big play in that situation and the Chargers smothered it out. I take credit for that play call there. I have to see what happened. The play was designed for Jalen Richard, from where I was standing I wasn’t sure how much pressure there was. But, it looked like Melvin Ingram III was beating down on him. That was on play amongst other that cost us the game.”
