Chargers sign LB Tre’Von Johnson, place Denzel Perryman on IR

With starting inside linebacker Denzel Perryman lost for the season, the Chargers needed to make a roster move. That move has been made in the form of Tre’Von Johnson. Per the Chargers team site:

The 6-2, 232-pound linebacker originally entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Arizona Cardinals in 2017 out of Weber State. He was waived during final roster reductions, and subsequently spent the majority of last season on the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad before being promoted to the active roster in Week 17. Johnson appeared in four preseason games for the Cowboys this summer, registering nine tackles and one pass defensed. After being waived by Dallas, he spent the beginning of this season on the Seattle Seahawks’ practice squad.

The biggest takeaway from this is that the Chargers are, at least for the moment, comfortable with their in-house answers for filling in with Perryman out. Jatavis Brown and Hayes Pullard should be expected to get the majority of the snaps in his place. Pullard looked much improved this past preseason and continued to look good in his limited time since being re-signed to the team. Brown was one Pro Football Focus’ top performers this past Sunday.

Johnson’s spot on the practice squad has been taken by Jonathan Celestin another linebacker.
