Christian McCaffrey is on pace to break the Panthers’ all-time record for yards from scrimmage

With each one of his shifty moves, we could be watching history in the making.

Christian McCaffrey is on pace to break the Carolina Panthers single-season record for total yards from scrimmage. Through nine games CMC has churned out 1,018 yards (579 rushing, 439 receiving) which averages out to 113.1 yards per contest. If he can keep this pace over a full 16-game season, McCaffrey will produce 1,810 yards from scrimmage which would shatter the Panthers record. Per Football Reference, here are the team’s all-time leaders:

By exceeding 1,800 yards, McCaffrey wouldn’t only break the Panthers’ single season record, he’d absolutely crush it.

The mix of McCaffrey’s yards would make his season even more special. At his current pace he will finish the season with 1,029 rushing yards and 781 receiving yards. According to Football Reference, only seven players in NFL history have eclipsed 1,000 rushing yards and 780 receiving yards in a single season: Marshall Faulk (three times), Todd Gurley, David Johnson, Le’Veon Bell, Matt Forte, Steven Jackson, and Roger Craig. This list includes some of the most dominant and versatile backs in league history, and Christian McCaffrey looks poised to join their ranks.

When looking at CMC’s season thus far, most of his production came between Weeks 2-3 and Weeks 9-10. In Week 2-3 his 333 yards led the NFL and was aided by his 102 receiving yards against the Atlanta Falcons followed by his 184 rushing yards against the Cincinnati Bengals. Over his last two games in Weeks 9-10, McCaffrey’s 295 yards is third in the NFL, trailing Nick Chubb and Ezekiel Elliott (tied at 299 yards) by just four yards.

McCaffrey is also finding the end zone. His eight total touchdowns through nine games puts him on pace for 14 scores this year. A total of 14 touchdowns would rank third on the Panthers all-time list, trailing only DeAngelo Williams (20 in 2008) and Muhsin Muhammad (16 in 2004).

CMC is on pace to re-write the Panthers record books. Or, said in another and more appropriate way, Christian McCaffrey is on target to hurdle his way to the top.
