Cowboys’ victory over Redskins is good news for Giants

Race for NFC East crown tightens, and last-place Giants remain relevant

The Dallas Cowboys’ 31-23 Thanksgiving Day victory over the Washington Redskins was good news for the New York Giants. It means that if the Giants can upset the Philadelphia Eagles in Philadelphia on Sunday the Giants will be only two games back in the NFC East with five games to play.

Here are the current NFC East standings:

1 - Dallas Cowboys: 6-5 overall, 3-1 division, 5-4 conference
2 - Washington: 6-5 overall, 2-1 division, 6-4 conference
3 - Philadelphia Eagles: 4-6 overall, 1-1 division, 2-5 conference
4 - New York Giants: 3-7 overall, 0-3 division, 1-5 conference

Here is the remaining schedule for all four teams:

Washington: @PHI, NYG, @JAX, @TEN, PHI
Dallas: NO, PHI, @IND, TB, @NYG
Philadelphia: NYG, WAS, @DAL, @LAR, HOU, @WAS
Giants: @PHI, CHI, @WAS, TEN, @IND, DAL

Right now, things would appear to set up well for the division-leading Cowboys. Sunday’s win by Dallas, though, helps the Giants as it increases the chance that the winner of the division won’t get to 10 victories.

If they manage to do the improbable and win out, the Giants could get to 9-7. Depending on potential tie-breakers, even that might not be good enough.

Still, Thursday’s Dallas-Washington outcome increased — even if just by a little — the chance that the Giants can make their unlikely dream a reality.
