Giants’ coach Pat Shurmur lauds pass protection, play of Jamon Brown

Offensive line finally shows signs of coming together

It may qualify as a ‘Master of the Obvious’ type of statement, but New York Giants coach Pat Shurmur said Tuesday that the team’s pass protection was its best of the season in Monday’s 27-23 victory over the San Francisco 49ers.

“I thought for the most part our pass protection was as good as its been this year,” Shurmur said during a conference call on Tuesday.

The Giants, who had given up 31 sacks in eight games entering Monday, surrendered only one against the 49ers.

The Giants were bolstered along that line by the insertion of Jamon Brown, recently awarded to the Giants on waivers from the Los Angeles Rams, into the starting lineup at right guard.

“I thought he did a good job,” Shurmur said. “I thought he did some of the things that we thought he could do. He’s very firm, he gets his hands on you. I thought he played well.”

Shurmur credited Brown and offensive line coaches Hal Hunter and Ben Wilkerson for getting Brown up to speed well enough to play a full game less than two weeks after becoming a Giant.

“It’s a credit to him and to Hal and Ben,” Shurmur said. “He’s only been here a little over a week and he was able to go in there and really show up in a way that you don’t typically see for a guy that’s been here that short of a period of time.”

Brown was the ninth offensive lineman to start a game for the Giants who were using their fifth starting combination of the season. Perhaps this is one, with Nate Solder, Will Hernandez, Spencer Pulley, Brown and Chad Wheeler, they can feel better about going forward with.

Pro Football Focus said the Giants gave up only six pressures (three by Brown, three by Hernandez) in the 32 drop backs by Eli Manning.
