The Chiefs extend their record to 8-1, defeating the Browns 37-21 on the road.
Kareem Hunt — who grew up just 20 miles from FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland — put on a show for the hometown crowd, with three touchdowns and 141 scrimmage yards that helped push the Chiefs to a 37-21 defeat of the Cleveland Browns, and extend their record to 8-1 on the season.
First quarter
For the ninth consecutive game, the Chiefs won the coin toss, deferring to the second half and kicking off to start the game.
After a touchback, the Browns began their first possession at their own 25. A deep pass on first down to Damion Ratley fell incomplete, but Baker Mayfield found Jarvis Landry for a 17-yard gain on second down. After a pair of handoffs to Nick Chubb — one of which was stopped for no gain — Mayfield’s five-yard pass to Landry was short of the first down marker.
At their own 49, the Browns elected to go for it on fourth and one, and succeeded by inches. After another deep incompletion to Landry and a four-yard rush from Chubb, the Browns were forced to punt when Mayfield couldn’t connect to Ratley. Britton Colquitt’s punt was downed at the Kansas City five-yard line, pinning the Chiefs deep in their own territory.
The Browns got a hand on Patrick Mahomes’ arm for his first throw of the game, and Travis Kelce was unable to bring in the wobbling pass. The Mahomes tried a pass to Watkins that fell incomplete — but T.J. Carrie was penalized for defensive pass interference on the play, giving the Chiefs a new set of downs at the 11.
The Chiefs got another first down on a pair of completions to Watkins and Tyreek Hill. On the next play, Mahomes kept the ball and turned the corner on the left side, gaining 21 yards — but the Chiefs had to give some of it back when Watkins was penalized for holding. Then the Chiefs got another 21 yards with a pass to Kelce, which put them at midfield. Mahomes tried a short pass that Chris Conley couldn’t bring in. On second down, Mahomes completed a screen pass on the left to Kareem Hunt, and Hunt found both blockers and open space to make his way to the end zone.

The 50-yard scoring play was Hunt’s first touch of the game, and extended his streak of games with a touchdown to eight. After Harrison Butker’s extra point, the Chiefs led 7-0 with 8:14 remaining in the first quarter.
After another touchback, the Browns picked up a first down with a seven-yard rush and a two-yard pitch to Breshad Perriman, and then a seven-yard pass to Duke Johnson. A handoff to Chubb gained four, and the Browns got another first down with another nine-yard pass to Antonio Callaway that put the Browns across midfield. After an incompletion to Perriman, Mayfield found David Njoku for a 19-yard gain. From the Kansas City 27, Mayfield missed Perriman again on first down, and then handed off to Chubb for a gain of three. But on third down, Jordan Lucas sacked Mayfield for a nine-yard loss on a safety blitz, and the Browns had to settle for a 51-yard Greg Joseph field goal, which narrowed the Chiefs’ lead to 7-3 with 2:45 remaining in the first quarter.
After a 19-yard return from Tremon Smith, the Chiefs started at the 25-yard line. The Browns were penalized for 12 men on the field on the opening play of the drive, and then Hunt turned his first rush of the game into a 25-yard gain that put the Chiefs across midfield. Mahomes hit Watkins for a 27-yard gain that was called back when Cameron Erving was flagged for holding. Mahomes then scrambled for three, and was sacked for a two-yard loss, which brought up third and 19. The Chiefs tried another screen pass to the left — this one to Spencer Ware — who cut across the middle and created a 25-yard gain for a first down.

Second quarter
A 12-yard end-around to Hill put the Chiefs in the red zone with another set of downs. After an incompletion to Kelce and a rush by Watkins, Mahomes found Kelce in the end zone for an 11-yard touchdown pass, and the Chiefs led 14-3 with 13:30 left in the half.

The Browns started at their 25 after a touchback. Four consecutive rushes by Chubb and a four-yard pass to Callaway gave the Browns a pair of first downs. Another pair of Chubb rushes and a three-yard completion to Johnson on third down wasn’t enough, and the Browns went for it again on fourth and two from the Chiefs 43. Mayfield hit Johnson with a 23-yard pass that gave the Browns a first down at the 20.
After a five-yard pass to Chubb — and then a 12-yard rush — the Browns had first and goal at the three-yard line. On the next play, Chubb scored on a three-yard run. The Browns decided to try for a two-point conversion, but Mayfield’s pass was intercepted, and the attempt failed. With 6:29 remaining in the half, the Chiefs led 14-9.
The Chiefs went right to work after another touchback. Mahomes hit Watkins for a 19-yard gain, and then found Hill on a deep pass that was good for 40 yards, putting the Chiefs at the Cleveland 16. A five-yard delay of game penalty pushed the Chiefs back out of the red zone, and then Mahomes found Hill for an eight-yard gain. On the next play, Mahomes was sacked for a two-yard loss, but the Browns accepted the holding penalty called on Mitchell Schwartz, and the Chiefs were back outside the 20.
Mahomes hit Hill for a 13-yard pass, and then Hunt went around right end to finally gain a first down at the Cleveland one-yard line. One the next play, Hunt plunged through the line for a touchdown, extending the Chiefs lead to 21-9 with 2:24 remaining in the half.

Dontrell Hilliard’s 16-yard kickoff return started the Browns at the 21. A pair of passes — one to Ratley and one to Rashard Higgins — gave the Browns a first down just before the two-minute warning. A screen pass to Johnson gained another. After a short pass to Landry gained three, Dee Ford got a jump on the snap and sacked Mayfield for a seven-yard loss, stripping the ball and recovering the fumble. But the officials said Ford was offsides, and play was nullified.
That brought up third and two and midfield. Mayfield’s pass to Johnson was short, and Cleveland opted for a third fourth-down try. But this time, the Chiefs converted it for them, when Derrick Nnadi was penalized for encroachment.
From the Chiefs 44, Mayfield hit Landry for 17 yards, and then Johnson got out of bounds after an eight-yard gain put the Browns in the red zone. On the next play, Mayfield found Johnson for a 19-yard touchdown pass. The Browns continued to be aggressive — attempting a two-point conversion — but it failed. The Chiefs now led 21-15, with just 26 seconds remaining in the half.
The Chiefs tried to get at least a field goal out of their last possession. Tremon Smith got a good start with a 34-yard kickoff return that started the Chiefs at the 35-yard line. Mahomes missed Kelce, and then found Conley for a 23-yard gain that put the Chiefs past midfield. Mahomes spiked the ball to stop the clock, but did so before the officials were ready. That cost the Chiefs 10 yards, and forced them to take their final time out with eight seconds remaining. A pass to Anthony Sherman that he was able to take out of bounds gained nine yards, and then with nothing left on the clock, Mahomes’ deep pass to Demarcus Robinson was intercepted by Myles Garrett on the sideline to end the half.
Third quarter
Starting at the 25 after a touchback, the Chiefs opened the second half with a seven-yard pass to Hill, but it was nullified with a holding call on Andrew Wylie. Mahomes then found Robinson for a three-yard gain, and Watkins for 23 yards. A handoff to Hunt resulted in a loss of two yards, and a pass to Watkins gained eight. On third and four at the Cleveland 49, Mahomes found Ware all alone in the right flat, and Ware gained 21 yards.
A pass to Kelce gained nine, but on second and one, the Chiefs were called for three penalties. Only the holding penalty on Schwartz was enforced, which gave the Chiefs second and 11 at the Browns 29-yard line. After Demetrius Harris dropped a third down pass, Mahomes found Kelce for 16 yards, which gave the Chiefs a first down at the Cleveland 13. On the next play, Mahomes threw into a tight window in the end zone, and Kelce had his second touchdown catch of the day. The Chiefs led 28-15 with 10:03 remaining in the third quarter.

Beginning at their own 25 after a touchback, the Browns got a first down with an 11-yard Chubb rush, but then things started unraveling. Chubb was stopped for a one-yard loss, Mayfield missed Callaway with a deep pass, and a false start penalty on Njoku put the Browns at third and 16 at their own 30. The seven-yard pass to Landry wasn’t enough, and Cleveland had to punt.
But the Chiefs broke through and Damien Williams blocked the punt, which went out of bounds at the Browns 21-yard line. Two plays later, Hunt went around right end for his third touchdown of the day. Butker missed the extra point attempt, and the Chiefs led 35-15.

A touchback on the kickoff started the Browns at the 25 again. After a three yard-loss on a handoff to Chubb and a one-yard gain on a pass to Landry, Mayfield hit Perriman for an 18-yard gain for a first down. Chubb gained four on another rush, Mayfield missed Perriman, and then found Ratley for a seven-yard gain for another first down just past midfield. Njoku caught a pass that gained nine, and Mayfield hit Perriman for 18 yards, putting the Browns at the Chiefs 21-yard line. A pass to Johnson gained 11 yards, Chubb was stopped for no gain, and on the next play, Chris Jones sacked Mayfield for a loss of 13 yards, which pushed the Browns out of the red zone.
Mayfield left the game to be evaluated for a concussion after his helmet collided with Charvarius Ward’s helmet during the sack. Tyrod Taylor entered the game as quarterback for the Browns.
But on the next play — a short pass to Njoku that gained 11 — Hitchens was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct, which gave the Browns a new set of downs at the Chiefs six-yard line.
Fourth quarter
Three plays later, Taylor found Johnson for a five yard touchdown pass. The Browns again opted for a two-point conversion — which was again unsuccessful when Taylor was sacked — and the Chiefs now led 34-21.
The Chiefs went right to work after a touchback. Hunt gained 10 yards on an off-tackle run. Mahomes found Kelce for 11. Watkins had a seven-yard reception to put the Chiefs past midfield, and Mahomes found Ware for 14 yards. After Mahomes couldn’t connect with Ware on a pass, Ware went around right end for 11 yards to the Cleveland 22-yard line. But then the drive stalled. After consecutive handoffs to Hunt gained only a yard and Mahomes missed Robinson on third down, the Chiefs had to settle for a 39-yard Butker field goal that extended their lead to 37-21 with 9:30 remaining in the game.
The Browns started at their 25 again, with Mayfield back in the game. A pair of incomplete passes — and a defensive holding penalty on Dorian O’Daniel — gave the Browns a first down, and a 17-yard Chubb rush got another one. Another pair of incompletions brought up third down, but Mayfield’s pass to Higgins was short. For the fourth time, the Browns tried a fourth down play, but this time, Breeland Speaks tackled Johnson for a one-yard loss after he caught a pass in the left flat, and the Chiefs took over at their own 46-yard line with 7:47 remaining in the game.
Mahomes gained 18 with a completion to Kelce, and Hunt went around right end to gain 13. Hunt was stopped for a one-yard loss. On the next play, Mahomes couldn’t connect with Hunt, bringing up third and 11. Then Mahomes was sacked for a 13-yard loss, and the Chiefs had to punt for the first time in the game.
The Browns didn’t give up. Starting at their own 17, Njoku caught a pass good for 14 yards, and then Mayfield found Callaway for 38, putting them at the Chiefs 31. But on the next play, Steven Nelson intercepted a pass intended for Seth DeValve, returning it to the Chiefs 35 with 4:29 remaining.
Since the Browns were then out of timeouts, all the Chiefs had to do was run out the clock with a couple of first downs. They stayed on the ground and got one, and then had to punt. Cleveland got the ball at its own eight-yard line with 24 seconds remaining, but the fight was over.
