Panthers claim Kenjon Barner off waivers; waive Josh Hawkins

The Panthers made a roster move late this afternoon.

The Panthers have added another running back to their roster after claiming former Panthers, Eagles, Chargers, Eagles, Panthers and Patriots running back Kenjon Barner off waivers. Cornerback Josh Hawkins, who the Panthers claimed after being released by the Packers in September, was waived to make room for Barner on the roster.

Hawkins saw limited playing time with the Panthers and was mostly used on special teams as a gunner. He was originally signed to the practice squad and was activated after the team placed safety Da’Norris Searcy on injured reserve due to a concussion.

Barner spent the 2018 preseason with the Panthers and was expected to make the 53 man roster but was ultimately cut in favor of Cameron Artis-Payne, who has spent the majority of this season on the inactive list.

In case you’ve lost count, this is Barner’s third time being a member of the Panthers organization. Based on his career history, it’s likely that he won’t be around for very long before he ends up with the Eagles again to keep his unusual career cycle going. At any rate, he’s here now and we’ll keep you updated on how the Panthers plan to use him if and when that information becomes available.
