The Panthers held off a late comeback attempt by the Bucs to secure the win and a 6-2 record on the season.
The Carolina Panthers unleashed their offense on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the first half today, scoring a franchise record 35 points in the opening half en route to a dominating 42-28 victory to improve their record to 6-2 and give themselves momentum heading into a big game in Pittsburgh on Thursday night.
There’s no other way to put it—the Panthers dominated the Bucs in the first half today. In the first quarter, after the Panthers went three-and-out on their first drive, Eric Reid intercepted an errant Ryan Fitzpatrick pass and returned it to the 10 yard line, setting up a quick three play drive that ended in an Alex Armah touchdown run. The Panthers wouldn’t look back after that—scoring again on their next possession when Christian McCaffrey scored his first touchdown of the day on a three-yard run.
The Bucs would pull back to within one score on an OJ Howard touchdown, but then the Panthers took over with 21 unanswered points. Curtis Samuel exploded for a 33 yard touchdown run on a double reverse, Christian McCaffrey slithered his way in from one yard out for his second score of the day, and Greg Olsen made an incredible one-handed grab for a 17-yard score. The Bucs were able to find OJ Howard in the end zone once again just before the half ended to pull to within 21 points at the break.
The second half started the same as the first with each team going three-and-out on their opening drive, and then the Bucs rattled off two straight touchdowns to pull the game to within one score before a Cam Newton to Curtis Samuel touchdown put the game out of reach for good.
Other than an abysmal third quarter that saw a comedy of errors from the Panthers (such as using all three timeouts on one drive that didn’t result in points), the Panthers looked like a 6-2 playoff contender today. The offense was electric in the first half and the defense did a great job at keeping the Bucs from doing much damage.
In the third quarter the Panthers clearly took their foot off the gas pedal and nearly let the Bucs come back to steal one, but thankfully they righted the ship in the fourth quarter and held on to win a huge division game.
The Panthers are on a short week as they face the Steelers on Thursday. Hopefully this win will give them some momentum for their mid-week matchup with a quality opponent.
