Panthers waive C.J. Anderson, sign Travaris Cadet

The Panthers have released the veteran running back after signing him to a 1-year deal in free agency last offseason.

Update (5:24 p.m. ET) - The Panthers have signed former Appalachian State running back Travaris Cadet to fill Anderson’s spot on the 53-man roster.

The Carolina Panthers have waived running back C.J. Anderson according to Jourdan Rodrigue of the Charlotte Observer.

Anderson signed a one-year contract worth $1.7 million in the offseason, but he hasn’t been much of a factor in their offensive game plan through the first nine games of 2018. Anderson has only rushed 24 times for 104 yards in nine games, which is well below what he expected to produce given that he rushed for over 1,000 yards in his final season with the Denver Broncos in 2017.

Panthers general manager Marty Hurney had this to say about the decision:

“When we signed C.J. in the spring he saw a bigger role than he has had, and honestly, at the time so did we,” general manager Marty Hurney said. “But Christian McCaffrey has taken so much of the offense and so much of the plays, we just made the decision that this was the best thing for all parties involved.”

We’ll probably never find out if this is true or not, but it wouldn’t surprise me in the least if Anderson requested this transaction. There’s no point in him wasting a prime year of his career on the bench if he can go elsewhere and produce, and it’s clear that the Panthers didn’t have any plans for him if they just let him go for free.

Hopefully this move doesn’t come back to bite the Panthers, and hopefully Anderson doesn’t end up somewhere else in the NFC South this year—like Atlanta or New Orleans, who the Panthers will face in the final three weeks of the year.

Moving forward, the Panthers will likely give the ‘running back who just sits on the bench and does nothing’ spot to Cameron Artis-Payne, who has only been on the active game day roster twice this season.
