Ugh.
Well, here’s some news that sucks.
Upon returning to practice on Wednesday, Philadelphia Eagles running back Darren Sproles aggravated the hamstring injury that has kept him out since Week 1, according to NFL insider Adam Schefter.
After being expected to play against the Dallas Cowboys, Sproles is now expected to be out for Sunday night’s game. “Sproles was highly disappointed, as were the Eagles,” Schefter added.
Ugh.
It would’ve been great for the Eagles to get Sproles back given how their backfield has been unimpressive this season. At the very least, he would’ve helped in pass protection as a third down back.
Making matters worse for the Eagles is they just released their primary punt returner — DeAndre Carter — earlier this week. And, naturally, the Eagles can’t bring Carter back because he was claimed on waivers by the Texans. (Hey, aren’t you glad Chance Warmack is making $2 million just to waste a roster spot?)
It remains to be seen who’ll return punts for the Eagles now. Newly acquired wide receiver Golden Tate has an impressive 10.6 career average but he’s only handled four returns in the last three seasons combined. Corey Clement and Nelson Agholor could also be in the mix for punt returns.
In any case, it really just sucks that Sproles suffered a setback. It’s unclear if/when he’ll return this season now, if at all.
