It’s the middle of November and here we are again discussing another kicker change for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
As many of you know, the team released Chandler Catanzaro on Monday evening and signed Cairos Santos to the 53-man roster. Catanzaro, really struggled this season and the team couldn’t rely on the former Cardinal, or Jet any longer.
Santos, has previously kicked for the Chiefs and Rams before he signed with the Buccaneers. In his career, Santos has an 84.1% career kicking percentage and has made 132 out of 138 extra points throughout his career.
Everytime head coach Dirk Koetter is asked a question about the kicking situation, you can tell he wants no part of it and is tired of the constant drama at the position. Koetter spoke to the media today and it was kicker question galore at One Buc place.
You would think that the head coach of the football team would have watched the workout that Santos had a few weeks ago with the Buccaneers, but that was not the case. Koetter had this to say when asked if he saw Santos workout.
“I did not,” Koetter said.
Strange and kind of weird to me. With the constant issues at the kicking position, you’d have to think that Koetter would have at least wanted to see how he performed, but all Koetter knows about Santos is that he is his kicker for hopefully the rest of the season.
Every kicker that comes to Tampa Bay is doomed it seems like, no matter what kind of success they had with their previous franchise. Ever since the team let go of Matt Bryant, he has left this curse over the team that has yet to be lifted. The analytics aren’t good according to Koetter and he didn’t even want to share the information with the media.
“They’ve got a ranking on it. I mean, I’m embarrassed to even tell you, so I won’t. I’ll let someone else tell you,” Koetter said.
Yup, it’s that bad.
Anyway, Santos was also in the building today and was asked on what he will bring to the team. He had the following to say.
“I’ve played in some tough places – three and a half years in Kansas City, Chicago – so I’m used to elements and much colder than what normally get at places, winds,” Santos said. “I’ve learned too to illustrate all that through my consistency. That’s really what describes me the best. I’m just looking to come in, be myself and then help the team.”
For the health of Buccaneer fans around the world, I sure hope that Tampa Bay has found a kicker competent of kicking the ball through the uprights consistently.
