49ers place Breida, Pettis on IR, announce two PS promotions

The 49ers are evening out their roster with some of the injuries in anticipation of Sunday’s Los Angeles Rams game.

The San Francisco 49ers announced some roster transactions Saturday afternoon. The team has placed running back Matt Breida and wide receiver Dante Pettis on injured reserve for the final game of the season against the Los Angeles Rams while promoting wide receiver Max McCaffrey and defensive lineman Ryan Delaire from the practice squad.

Breida had been fighting ankle issues all season but was heavily leaned on despite the injury. Just when you thought he’d be out—he’d come back into the huddle and take it another 12 yards. It looks like the final game was the the time to pull him, and Breida (finally) hits IR.

Pettis was coming into his own the last few weeks, getting 359 yards the last five games. His shake routes had been putting defenders into a fits leading to five touchdowns for 2018. A knee injury against the Chicago Bears put him out of commission, but Kyle Shanahan says it’s an MCL and not near as serious as an ACL tear.

Regarding the promotions, McCaffrey has been playing the roster musical chairs game as great as anyone else. He was signed to the team in 2017 from the Green Bay Packers practice squad and waived after a foot injury in August. He was suspended for four games shortly after being waived and brought back to the 49ers in November.

Delaire had a bit of an in and out with the main roster as well, suiting up in October, but returning to the practice squad shortly thereafter. Here’s what the team said about Delaire:

Delaire (6-4, 260) was originally signed to the 49ers practice squad on September 26, 2018 and was promoted to San Francisco’s active roster on October 6, 2018. He appeared in one game prior to being waived on October 15 and re-signed to the team’s practice squad on October 17.

A 26-year-old native of Windsor, CT, Delaire attended Towson University for two seasons (2013-14) where he started 27 games and registered 132 tackles, 32 tackles for loss, 22.5 sacks, five forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries and four passes defensed. He transferred to Towson after three years (2010-12) at the University of Massachusetts. At UMass, he appeared in 18 games and finished with 28 tackles, six tackles for loss, three sacks and one forced fumble.
