Broncos at Bengals game balls: Phillip Lindsay is having himself a year

Is there a player more deserving of a game ball for the Denver Broncos 24-10 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals than Phillip Lindsay?

The Denver Broncos three-game winning streak has really showcased how great of a rookie class they have as for we have another week with multiple rookies gracing our game ball list. With a 24-10 win over the Cincinnati Bengals, the Broncos are now in good position to make a serious run at the playoffs in their final four games and that is largely due to the rookies you see listed here.

Phillip Lindsay

What is left to say about the undrafted rookie? He finished the game with 19 carries for 157 yards and two touchdowns for an eye-popping 8.3 yards per carry. Lindsay’s 937 yards rushing are the most through 12 games by any undrafted rookie since the 1970 merger, according to NFL Research. Lindsay is a special player, so just sit back and enjoy it. - Ian St. Clair

Von Miller

With 12.5 sacks on the season, Von Miller ranks second in the NFL as he has returned to MVP form with a new partner in crime in rookie Bradley Chubb taking some of the heat off his side of the line. The two have become the most fearsome sack duo in the NFL with a combined 22.5 sacks on the season. Miller now has a sack in seven-straight games, which has tied his previous longest streak. Bradley Chubb

Most of Broncos Country including Von Miller was elated that the Broncos were able to draft Bradley Chubb. That move is paying big dividends to a team who is actually fighting for a playoff spot inexplicably in a season where most of us had written them off. Chubb made a key strip sack in the game and even recovered it to help the Broncos to their 6th win of the season. He was a force all game though with a couple of QB hits and 3 tackles to boot. This team is blessed with what looks like a 2nd elite talent at OLB to pair with Von Miller who’s really stepping up week after week and showing better and better play as his rookie season wears on. - Sadaraine

Courtland Sutton

When Denver drafted Courtland Sutton, the idea was that he would eventually take over for Demaryius Thomas. Against the Bengals, that replacement was finalized. His four catches for 85 yards were well over half the passing yards that Case Keenum had. His 30 yard touchdown grab on the 50/50 ball Keenum threw up in the 3rd quarter was exactly what he was brought in to do. Having a reliable receiver who can make those 50/50 grabs consistently is a huge benefit to the offense. It was on full display in Cincinnati, and should be for the foreseeable future. - Adam Malnati

Colby Wadman

Yep - game ball to the punter, and a well deserved one! In an ideal world, the punter is the most bored & under-utilized player on the roster. But in the real NFL, having a punter who plays like Wadman did Sunday is a major asset. He punted 6 times for a total of 260 yards, or 43.3 yards per punt. But what’s more important is where he put those punts on the field. And, with a little penalty help from the Bengals, his six punts forced Cincinnati to start drive after drive from deep in their own territory. He consistently flipped the field and forced Cincinnati into terrible field position, which helped put even more pressure on first-time starting QB Jeff Driskel. That became even more important late in the game, when the Bengals were forced to abandon the run as they tried to claw their way back, and 2 huge 4th quarter sacks were the result. As odd as it seems, it’s not inaccurate to say that the Broncos’ punter helped give Von Miller & Bradley Chubb the opportunities they needed to stifle any hope of a Bengals comeback. - Taylor Kothe

Wadman’s punts had the Bengals starting at the following spots on the field:

  • CIN 5 yard line
  • CIN 12 yard line
  • CIN 16 yard line
  • MUFFED punt - Denver Recovers at CIN 33
  • CIN 12 yard line
  • CIN 15 yard line

Offensive Line

When we lost two of our original starting offensive lineman for the season, I expected the OL to implode. No only has the OL not imploded, they are playing as least as well as when Ron Leary and Matt Paradis were still in there. Did they allow some pressure on Case Keenum on Sunday? Sure, but Geno Atkins is still elite, so I was expecting him to destroy our interior OL. He did not. The OL allowed Keenum to be sacked twice for eight total yards. But they allowed our running game to flourish. The Broncos ran 34 times for 218 yards and two TDs. That’s 6.4 yards per carry. Yes, I know it was against one of the worst defenses in football, but good teams execute when they are supposed to so that they can beat the teams that they are supposed to. On Sunday our OL did just that. They executed and for that they get my game ball. FWIW It’s hard to gauge Turner and Wilkinson, but according to PFF Bolles is the 27th best OT in the league right now and Veldheer is the 57th. - Joe Mahoney
