Chiefs cut practice squad defensive back

The Chiefs parted ways with defensive back Josh Hawkins, per the NFL’s transaction report.

The Kansas City Chiefs made national news with their first transaction of the weekend Friday evening when they released Kareem Hunt. They followed it with a minor move when they released defensive back Josh Hawkins from the practice squad on Saturday, according to the NFL’s transactions report.

The Chiefs signed Hawkins on November 18, the same day they called wide receiver Gehrig Dieter up from the practice squad.

Hawkins, 25, is a third-year player out of East Carolina who spent 2016-17 with the Green Bay Packers before spending time earlier this season on the practice squad with the Carolina Panthers.

With Hunt’s Friday release, my expectation is that the Chiefs will have Spencer Ware, Damien Williams and Darrel Williams active against the Oakland Raiders this weekend.

The Hawkins move makes me wonder if the team plans to add another developmental running back to the practice squad to fill the new vacancy. The Chiefs have also yet to announce a corresponding move when it comes to the 53-man roster after the Hunt release.
