Chiefs release running back Kareem Hunt

The team released a statement from owner Clark Hunt on Friday night.

The Kansas City Chiefs announced in a statement early Friday evening that they have released star running back Kareem Hunt.

Here is the full statement from Chiefs owner Clark Hunt:

CLARK HUNT: “Earlier this year, we were made aware of an incident involving running back Kareem Hunt. At that time, the National Football League and law enforcement initiated investigations into the issue. As part of our internal discussions with Kareem, several members of our management team spoke directly to him. Kareem was not truthful in those discussions. The video released today confirms that fact. We are releasing Kareem immediately.”

The statement and move follow a wild course of events that began early Friday afternoon when TMZ Sports released a video of Kareem Hunt from a February incident that shows him pushing and kicking a woman.

According to ESPN, the Chiefs sent Hunt home from their practice facility upon first learning of the video. The NFL then placed Hunt on the Commissioner’s Exempt List, and the Chiefs announced the release shortly thereafter.

NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport relayed a statement from Hunt after the Chiefs’ announcement.

“I want to apologize for my actions,” Hunt said, per Rapoport. “I deeply regret what I did. I hope to move on from this.”

Hunt, 23, was selected by the Chiefs in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft.
