The Miami Dolphins have placed another offensive weapon on injured reserve.
The Miami Dolphins’ injured reserve list just got even longer.
The team has placed tight end A.J. Derby on IR and claimed rookie cornerback Dee Delaney off of waivers from the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Derby, 27, joined the Dolphins in the middle of last year’s campaign after two seasons with the Denver Broncos. Following MarQueis Gray’s season ending injury in training camp, Derby was in line for a key role in the offense alongside rookie draft picks Mike Gesicki and Durham Smythe. Unfortunately for Derby, a foot injury has limited him to just four games this season, during which he caught three receptions for 48 yards and one touchdown.
Delaney was signed by the Jaguars after this year’s draft as an undrafted free agent. He was cut just before the regular season and was subsequently added to the team’s practice squad. Delaney bounced on and off of Jacksonville’s roster throughout the season, and after being waived this weekend, was swiped by the Dolphins before he could pass through waivers and end up back on the Jaguars’ practice squad. The Dolphins will likely use Delaney as a special teams contributor and secondary depth if he’s active on game days.
Derby is the 11th player to land on Miami’s injured reserve this season. The list is comprised of many starters and key contributors including Derby, wide receiver Albert Wilson, wide receiver Jakeem Grant, guard Josh Sitton, center Daniel Kilgore, defensive tackle Vincent Taylor, defensive end William Hayes, quarterback Luke Falk, tight end MarQueis Gray, linebacker Chase Allen, and cornerback Cordrea Tankersley.
The Dolphins are left with three tight ends on the active roster: Mike Gesicki, Durham Smythe, and Nick O’Leary.
