Learn more about Philadelphia’s Week 17 matchup.
In order to make the 2019 NFL playoffs, the Philadelphia Eagles need to beat the Washington Redskins AND hope the Chicago Bears can beat the Minnesota Vikings.
The key word there is “hope.” That’s all the Eagles can do while they try to mainly focus on something they CAN control: beating Washington.
The Eagles should be able to win on Sunday. They’re playing good football recently. The offense has gone over 30 points the last two weeks. Reigning Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles playing well has helped in that regard. The defense, meanwhile, is forcing some turnovers and getting pressure on the quarterback.
Washington is not playing good football recently. Jay Gruden’s side actually ranks 30th overall in weighted DVOA. That’s very bad. Josh Johnson has brought some level of competency to the quarterback position for Washington but he’s not going to single-handily beat the Eagles, especially behind a porous offensive line. Washington’s vulnerable secondary got even weaker this week with the team releasing one of their best players, D.J. Swearinger.
It feels like the only way the Eagles can lose this game is if they beat themselves. Philly has been able to stay out of their own way recently so it seems like they’ll be able to do that once again. But, as they say: that’s why they play the games.
Here’s everything you need to know about how to watch this one.
