Check out a collection of the biggest news and best writing that you may have missed from our coverage leading up to the Panthers at Bucs divisional showdown
People joke all the time that the ‘NFL’ stands for ‘Not For Long.’ Usually they use that as a pithy reference to the cut-throat nature of the business side of the league. Everybody from players to General Managers can be jettisoned without so much as a thanks for stopping by when they start under-performing, no matter how beloved they are by their fans. It is also a useful phrase for fans of teams who are trending the wrong direction. The play offs are approaching and the Panthers recent loss to Seattle put a serious dent in their plans to participate.
Applying the short-term memory ethos of “Not For Long” means we, as fans, can step back and say “What Seattle game? Didn’t you see the Saints lost to the Cowboys?” Because that is hilarious, it hurts less to talk about, and it happened more recently. I mean, seriously, even the Panthers beat the Cowboys.
Anyway, that’s enough about the NFC South’s most disappointing team. This list is about the division’s most promising team, the Carolina Panthers. Check below for links to stories about an encouraging injury report, the emotional state of Panthers fans, a hot take on Norv Turner, and more.
Panthers Film Room: The red zone issues can be traced to one man
The Panthers continue to find inexplicable ways to lose football games. Seattle were worthy victors and nothing should be taken away from their win. The Panthers, however, had ample opportunities to increase their scoring output, but simply couldn’t. As Ron Rivera likes to say, they had plenty of “missed opportunities.”

Damiere Byrd placed on injured reserve; Lorenzo Doss added to roster
It’s fair to wonder what this injury does for Byrd’s career prospects. He’s been a mainstay on the injury report since working his way onto the 53 man roster. On top of the three major injuries he’s suffered that have sent him to IR, he’s also missed several practices and games this season with knee and ankle ailments. The best ability is availability, especially for a guy that makes his living on the fringe of the roster and special teams.

The Panthers need to maximize red zone opportunities to end losing streak
The 4-7 Tampa Bay Buccaneers are coming off a 27-9 win over the not-so-great San Francisco 49ers. The Bucs’ defense was able to get after Nick Mullens, sacking him four times. The Buccaneers held Mullens to 221 passing yards, one touchdown, and two fourth-quarter interceptions. Failed red-zone attempts and penalties in the second half would keep the 49ers from outgaining the Bucs.

Devin Funchess is questionable but expected to play on Sunday
The Panthers were back on the practice field again today as they prepare for a key NFC South matchup against the Buccaneers on Sunday. The good news is that everyone practiced in some capacity today. Colin Jones, who missed yesterday’s session, was back in action today.

Majority of Panthers fans not confident in team’s direction, split on what to do with Ron Rivera
A three-week losing streak has had a predictable affect on the confidence of Panthers fans. This week’s FanPulse survey shows fans at a new season-low for confidence in their team. Only 15% of fans said they were confident in this team going forward. Funnily enough, the graph looks a lot like something else to me.
