Coach updates us on all things Cowboys.
The latest on the Cowboys as they prep for the Colts, straight from Jason Garrett at his Thursday press conference. (All Garrett answers are paraphrased and not actual quotes).
Sean Lee and Tavon Austin looked good on Wednesday
Both Lee and Austin will practice again on Thursday. Ezekiel Elliott will practice, but Zack Martin won’t. He is day-to-day and they will monitor him as the week goes along. David Irving will work with the trainers again today.
The Colts are good at limiting sacks
The Cowboys have one of the best defenses in the NFL, but Indianapolis isn’t allowing a ton of sacks offensively. Jason Garrett noted that a huge challenge this week will be finding a way to create pressure and get home on Andrew Luck. The Colts offensive line plays well and Luck gets the ball out quickly while his receivers get open and present targets.
Byron Jones may or may not cover T.Y. Hilton/Eric Ebron.
When asked about Byron Jones covering either T.Y. Hilton or Eric Ebron, Jason Garrett took the opportunity to give some love to all of the team’s cornerbacks. He highlighted Chidobe Awuzie and Anthony Brown for having great seasons as well. He did note that Byron has the length, size and speed to cover anywhere and that he is very receptive to scheme changes and in-game adjustments, and will do whatever is asked of him.
Sean Lee will get time back in the lineup when healthy
Jason Garrett noted that Sean Lee is one of the best players on the Cowboys and when he’s healthy it won’t be a question of him returning to the lineup “somehow.” Obviously Dallas has Leighton Vander Esch and Jaylon Smith playing well, again this is another good problem to have.
Randy Gregory has done a good job influencing the game
We’ve seen Randy Gregory have his best overall season as a professional and Jason Garrett did say that Randy’s “presence is being felt.” He noted Gregory has made a few mistakes but that there is a lot of positive stuff to build on. Garret also said Gregory is around the QB and affecting the game and is showing a lot more confidence in his pass rush. He’s a popular player on the team because he is working so hard and has overcome much, and his personality is very likable.
Matt Eberflus’ defense is similar to the scheme they run in Dallas
Indianapolis has a former friend of the Cowboys in their first-year defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus. Jason Garrett noted that there are similarities between what he and the Cowboys both run, giving praise to Flus, and he said that there were good discussions about the opportunity Flus had when he originally left.
Taco Charlton responded well on Wednesday
The situation with Taco Charlton has been an interesting one and he was a healthy scratch Sunday. Coach noted the other day he had “to earn” his jersey on gamedays. Coach said Taco had a good practice on Wednesday and understands he needs to earn his opportunities.
