The wide receiver is stepping away to focus on his health.
New England Patriots wide receiver Josh Gordon announced on Twitter Monday morning that he is stepping away from the team to focus on his mental health. In his statement he thanked Bill Belichick and Robert Kraft for supporting him throughout the season.
At the same time, NFL Network reporter Tom Pelissero reported that Gordon is facing another suspension for violating the terms of his reinstatement under the substance abuse policy.
This means that Gordon will not be in uniform when the team takes on the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. In the first match-up between the two teams on Monday night football, Gordon caught four of six targets, for 42 yards, with the Patriots mainly aiming for vertical routes down the field. On the season, he was the team’s leading receiver with 720 yards and three touchdowns on forty receptions. (Gordon had a seventeen-yard touchdown catch with the Cleveland Browns before they traded him to New England for a late round pick.)
Gordon missed the entire 2015 and 2016 season for continued violations of the league’s substance abuse policy. He was reinstated near the end of the 2017 season, but the talented receiver will leave the field again a little over a year later.
