Kyle Shanahan offers partial insight into where ‘Chocolate Door’ comes from

The San Francisco 49ers mic’d up head coach Kyle Shanahan last Sunday against the Denver Broncos, and one thing we heard was some of the names he uses for plays. The list included:

Far right nasty
Big fly
Turbo
Zelda
14 Diablo
X Dragon
Charger
Chocolate door

Twitter follower @cubs2b23 suggested Nasty is a west coast offense term, but the rest of the terms are a bit unclear. Thankfully, on Wednesday, Shanahan offered at least a little bit of clarity as to how he comes up with some of the words. He was asked if he used a random word generator, and he said each word relates to the type of play the team is running.

Shanahan gave an example with “Chocolate Door,” saying that “chocolate” had to do with Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. He said it has to do with the play, but he can’t offer more specifics because it would give away the team’s groupings.

I remain convinced that 14 Diablo is a reference to “El Diablo” in Talladega Nights. I don’t know for certain, but given Shanahan’s love of Stepbrothers, I’ll stick with that.

The mic’d up segment did not show the play happening when Shanahan called for “Chocolate Door,” but for those who have seen Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, what do you think the grouping on the play might be?
