Nothing makes sense anymore.
Sunday’s game against the Rams was a weird situation for Lions fans. The Rams were favored by 10.5 points with the Lions at home, and no one really expected Detroit to win. But they almost did it anyway.
The game played out exactly how you wouldn’t have expected it to play out. The Rams, who are known for their meticulous, deep-cutting passing attack, were essentially shut down by the Lions’ pass defense, ranked 31st in DVOA heading into this game. The defense kept the Lions in the game and gave them a few opportunities to take the lead late in the game, but the offense couldn’t cash in.
It was a confusing and frustrating game, but there was a little something for everyone, whether you’re Team Tank or just want to see the Lions compete.

I don’t know what Sum 41 means to you, but to me, it means preparing for middle school and shitty pop punk. They are basically Canadian Blink-182 and sometimes it’s incredibly difficult to take their angst seriously. I mean, their name literally means the 41st day of summer—the day they decided to change the name of their band—because they were completely empty of having any semblance of creativity. Regardless, Sum 41 has a big place in my heart and this song feels like a good representation of such a bizarre, infuriating game.

The confusion comes from watching the Lions compete hard and look very good for most of the game against the league’s best. Where has this play been against the Bears? Or the Vikings? The Lions seem to be at their best when playing some of the best teams out there and tend to come out flat against weaker opponents. Nothing makes sense. Football is dumb.
My frustration is almost solely directed at the coaching staff. And since we’re on the topic of being unimaginative, I’ll do my early airing of grievances toward Jim Bob Cooter. I don’t believe he is going anywhere until the season ends, but if he isn’t fired the very second after the season is over, I might have a complete meltdown. Calling a draw play on third-and-goal from the 19-yard line was maybe the most infuriating thing I’ve seen all year. I wasn’t even that mad with the wide receiver screen call on 3rd-and-13 only because I was expecting it.
I think what I’m most worried about in terms of the future of this team is that it’s Matt Patricia that’s forcing JBC’s hand on third-down playcalls. Or that it’s Stafford being baited into killing the play and checking into an HB draw more often than not. I want to believe that we’re an OC and an offseason away from a good coaching staff/team. I really do.
