Lions vs. Bills: What Just Happened?

A collection of thoughts on the Lions’ Week 15 loss.

I’m not even mad. You shouldn’t be either. It’s whatever right now. The Lions lost a close game to a bad Bills team, and they deserved to do it. This season has been a complete and utter disaster, and the Lions look like the next team in a long line of teams that realize hiring someone from Bill Belichick’s coaching staff was a mistake.

As always, I have thoughts on this game. These are those thoughts.

Jim Bob deserves a lot of the credit for how bad this offense is. Matt Patricia does, too

The Lions had plenty of chances to make things happen on offense Sunday. Matthew Stafford played well for most of the game and was able to throw the long ball with success, especially to Kenny Golladay. That makes you wonder why Jim Bob called a pass in the flat to a 6-foot-8, 269 pound Levine Toilolo on third-and-long with the game on the line.

How does this play call ever make it onto the field? Jim Bob is looking at the game and he’s clearly overthinking about the Bills pass rush and totally forgetting his successes. He then draws up a conservative play to his tight end whose career YAC record is something like 5 yards. He goes to Matt Patricia with the play and Patricia gets all rocket scienced up and thinks that it’s just crazy enough to work. He sends it to the field. And it fails miserably. He proceeds to yell at the media for asking about it.

This isn’t the only time this has happened. It’s been an ongoing thing all year long. I, for one, am finally ready to say the Lions made a mistake by firing Jim Caldwell, and it shows more and more each week.

Kenny Golladay is a gosh damn grown man

Dude went off all damn day. Which, of course, meant that he was ignored by the coaching staff in crunch time. Just look at what he did.

Golladay showed on Sunday that he really can be a No. 1 receiver for the Lions. He grabbed seven receptions for 146 yards despite being covered by just about everyone. You should have faith is this young guy, but the Lions should also make sure they go out and get another receiver that can help take the pressure off of him. They also need to make sure they don’t trade that guy too.

Can y’all just clap for Matthew Stafford one time?

This season has been a complete and utter train wreck. It reminds me a lot of “Independence Day”. Not the holiday where people blow their hand off with firecrackers (although it feels like that sometimes). I’m talking about the movie.

With everything just going horribly wrong in the fight against the aliens, one pilot sacrifices himself for the greater good and becomes a complete and total hero to everyone in the world.

Matthew Stafford is that pilot. He just gets the crap kicked out of him every week, nothing good comes from it, and half the state hates him while the rest of the country doesn’t know he exists. Maybe it’s more like the firecracker piece.

Basically what I’m saying is that Stafford is riding this train all the way to hell and I’ve got nothing but respect for the guy for doing it.

Let’s talk about Draft’s baby. Let’s talk about all the good things and the bad things, that may be. Let’s talk about drafts.

It’s over everyone. The Lions are officially eliminated from the playoffs. All they have to do now is lose their last two games and head to April with a top-10 draft pick in hand. I’m sure a lot of people are excited about that, and they should be because while Bob Quinn has made some very questionable choices in the coaching department, his drafts—for the most part—have been on point. So you have to wonder what he’ll do with his highest draft pick yet.

I, for one, am looking forward to seeing what the Lions will do on Black Monday and in free agency in March. It’s amazing how good Lions fans are at preparing themselves for the offseason in December. It truly is a trait that I’m not sure any other fans of perennially bad organizations have mastered as well as us.

For the people that are mad, I give you my angry song. Sing this one at the top of your lungs in your car and you’ll feel a lot better.
