Matt Nagy hopeful that Mitchell Trubisky is back this week

Mitchell Trubisky was injured on Sunday, November 18, on a cheap hit by Minnesota Vikings safety Harrison Smith. He finished that game and there wasn’t any indication that his throwing shoulder was injured post game. The first the Chicago Bears acknowledged the injury was on Monday (11/19) when he was listed as a DNP on the official injury report before their Thanksgiving match-up against the Detroit Lions.

With no real practices that week, the injury designation was just an assumption “as-if” they would have practiced, but Trubisky’s shoulder was too sore for him to even throw a football. He wouldn’t have been able to go all week, and the Bears decided to roll with backup Chase Daniel against the Lions. The Bears won, and Trubiksy-Watch was on.

At last week’s practices, Trubisky still wasn’t able to throw on Wednesday or Thursday, but on Friday he was finally to do some light throwing. He was officially listed as limited all week and doubtful for the Giants game on Sunday. He tested his shoulder before yesterday’s game, but the Bears apparently weren't comfortable putting him out there and he was inactive.

Some experts speculated that had the game been a playoff contest they’d have played Trubisky, but aren’t these the same experts that said he could have played the week after his injury had they played on Sunday instead of Thursday?

Aren’t these the same experts that said he’d only miss the Lions game and be back for the game in New York?

The Bears decided it wasn’t in their best interests to play a quarterback that they hadn’t seen fully unleash his arm in practice since the injury. Not knowing what Trubisky’s arm was capable of isn’t a good way to game plan an offense, so sitting him one more week made sense to the team.

They prepped with Chase Daniel all week, they felt confident in Daniel playing well enough to win, but 4 fumbles, 2 interceptions, and 5 sacks later, and it left most wondering if a less than 100% Trubisky wouldn’t have been a better option.

“Today, he went and did some more throwing, where (is he) at? And then same thing for the rest of the days this week,” head coach Matt Nagy said immediately following the game yesterday via NBC Sports. “That’s our plan this whole time is communicate and see. I said last week, his arrow’s going up. Every day he feels like (that), and you can see when he’s throwing. So we’ll continue to keep our fingers crossed.”

Nagy said that playing a last place team wasn’t a factor in them going with their back-up QB on Sunday.

Earlier today, Nagy was asked if Trubisky would be a full practice participant this week as the Bears prep for the NFC West leading Los Angeles Rams. “I hope he is, but I can’t say that for sure,” he said via WGN’s Adam Hoge.

The Bears don’t practice until Wednesday, so we’ll know more in two days.

My guess is that since he threw on Friday and again on Sunday, that he’ll be throwing again this week. If he’s able to throw in practice, he should play on Sunday Night Football against the Rams.

With a ferocious L.A. pass rush, led by defensive player of the year candidate Aaron Donald, the Bears will need the athletic Trubisky to give them a chance to win.
