Minnesota Vikings News and Links: December 12, 2018

A big coaching change. Can this help propel the team into the playoffs?

Happy Wednesday, everyone!

Wow, big news yesterday, huh? Anyone who read the open thread yesterday will know that I am not upset at the decision to move on from DeFilippo. That being said, he’s a person, so let’s do away with some of the rhetoric I saw in the comments on a couple of other threads. There’s no need to say some of the ugly things that were being said about the guy. We’re better than that. Okay? Thanks.

I am excited to see how the offense responds to the change. I’m realistic, so I don’t expect them to suddenly become the ‘99 Vikings offense, but I do think we’ll see improvement, which will be welcomed. An average offensive performance would have gotten us a win in New England and in Seattle. Hey, the playoffs are still a very real possibility, and if the team gets hot now, who knows what could happen?

The NFC North title is also a possibility, but it’s kinda’ one of those Lloyd Christmas-chance possibilities. If the Vikings beat Miami on Sunday, then beat the Lions the following Sunday, and the Bears lose to the Packers on Sunday, and also lose to the 49ers the following week, THEN the December 30 Vikings-Bears match-up at US Bank Stadium would decide the NFC North Champion. I’m guessing the odds of this happening are about as low as the deepest layer of frog s*** in the New Jersey swamp, but hey, at least it’s a possibility, and that’s all I need.

Around the DN since our last open thread:

Ted shared the report that the Vikings parted ways with John DeFilippo. I think this was a good move by the team. Best of luck to DeFilippo wherever he goes, but it wasn’t working here, so it’s best to get it done.

Eric shared five game-changing plays from the Vikings-Seahawks matchup on Monday night.

Vikings news from other sources and news from around the rest of the league:

At Vikings.com, Coach Zimmer addressed the media yesterday to explain the coaching change, and Kirk Cousins also talked about the move and what it could mean for the team. Both of them echoed sentiments that I share. Zim said he doesn’t want the season to be wasted, and Cousins said that if they can put it together on offense, ‘it could be special’. I agree. I think the sky is the limit for this group, and the offense is far too talented to be struggling as they have been, so let’s hope they do put it together and do something special.

Yahoo Sports has a piece about one of the botched calls from Monday’s ‘game’.

From the Sporting News, the NFL plans to continue performing their own investigations, despite much criticism over their handling of the Kareem Hunt case. Ummmm, is anyone shocked?

Brett Favre has some interesting ideas on who should be the Packers’ new head coach from CBS Sports.

We come to today’s media selection:

Time to get revved up for crunch time of the season. Here is the best of the best, AC/DC. Enjoy!

Again, we all know the rules, but in case someone is new:

  • No discussion of politics or religion
  • No feeding of the trolls
  • This isn’t a male version of The View, so leave the gender hatred at the door
  • Keep the bad language to a minimum (using the spoiler tags, if you must)
  • Speaking of which, if discussing a newer show or movie, please use spoiler tags
  • No pictures that could get someone fired or in serious trouble with their employer
  • If you can’t disagree in a civil manner, feel free to go away
  • While navigating the open thread, just assume it’s sarcasm

With that, the beer light is on and the bar is open. Belly up and tie one on. Don’t forget to tip your waitress, and try the offense, we just got a new chef.
