Packers fire head coach Mike McCarthy

“Nice game, Coach. See you later this year for the rematch.” ~ Mike McCarthy, probably

In a move that shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, the Green Bay Packers have fired head coach Mike McCarthy just hours after they lost to the Arizona Cardinals 20 to 17, to fall to 4-7-1 on the season.

President and Chief Executive Officer Mark Murphy issued the following statement.

“The 2018 season has not lived up to the expectations and standards of the Green Bay Packers. As a result, I made the difficult decision to relieve Mike McCarthy of his role as head coach, effective immediately. Mike has been a terrific head coach and leader of the Packers for 13 seasons, during which time we experienced a great deal of success on and off the field. We want to thank Mike, his wife, Jessica, and the rest of the McCarthy family for all that they have done for the Packers and the Green Bay and Wisconsin communities. We will immediately begin the process of selecting the next head coach of the Green Bay Packers.”

The rift between McCarthy and starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers has reportedly been growing, but Rodgers hasn’t been the Rodgers of old in 2018. Whomever Green Bay hires will no doubt be tasked with getting Rodgers and their offense back on track.

Offensive coordinator Joe Philbin will take over on an interim basis.

The 8-4, NFC North leading Chicago Bears will host the Packers on December 16th.

All four NFC North teams lost today, with the Detroit Lions falling to the Los Angeles Rams 30 to 16, and the Minnesota Vikings losing to the New England Patriots 24 to 10, so even with Chicago’s 30 to 27 loss to the Giants, they maintain their two game lead in the win column over the 6-5-1 Vikes.

Bears’ fans, what are your thoughts on the Packers coaching change, and with the NFC North as a whole?
