Ravens place RB Alex Collins on injured reserve

After dealing with a foot injury for a majority of the season, and then being less involved in the game plan recently, the Baltimore Ravens announce that they have placed running back Alex Collins on injured reserve:

This effectively marks the end of a pretty disappointing follow up season to Collins’ 2017 breakout campaign for the Purple and Black. He’ll finish the year with a minuscule 411 rushing yards through 11 games, though he did manage to score seven times.

He’ll now be a restricted free agent with his status unclear, and with Baltimore now correspondingly promoting Kenneth Dixon, it’s fair to wonder if they’re looking to find a permanent replacement. In fact, they may have already found it in Gus Edwards who’s been the go to guy at the position as Lamar Jackson has taken the reins of the offense.

It also throws yet another wrench into what is a pretty complicated backfield situation for Baltimore:

If Edwards continues to perform, the only questions remaining surround who will be spelling him in the games (and possibly seasons) to come, but this move potentially signals who the Ravens would like to get a look at for doing so in this scenario. They’ll definitely be making some running back evaluations in Atlanta on Sunday, and now, Collins won’t be among them.
