Redskins Come Up Short In Tennessee, Fall To Titans 25-16

Tennesee all but ends the great Josh Johnson story and the Redskins playoffs chances with a 25-16 victory over Washington

Washington was able to get out to an early 3-0 lead against the Tennessee Titans today. With a quick score on their first drive, the game plan established early for the viewers, and the Titans themselves, that the Redskins were going to be aggressive and attack the Titans defense. Unfortunately, with an appealing game plan in place, the execution was not there. Penalties on the offensive side of the football killed drives sooner than they began, and the Redskins were unable to get the Titans offense off the field quickly. Seven first downs for the Titans offensively to the Redskins one first down.

Given the circumstances in which he joined Washington, Josh Johnson continues to show his leadership and composure as the Redskins fourth starting quarterback of the season. To start the second quarter, Washington overcame penalties and terrible field position to lead a 17-play 93-yard drive that lasted nearly 11 minutes. It goes down as a 93-yard drive, but after penalties (of course) and a big sack, the Redskins ended up driving from their one-yard line to get their first touchdown of the game.

Unfortunately, the Redskins defense was not able to capitalize on the great drive by their offense. The Redskins allowed the Titans to drive down the field with ease, to get a field goal heading into halftime. Washington, specifically Josh Johnson and Adrian Peterson, out-gained the Titans in the first half; however, had five more penalties and three less first downs than them.

Due to an injury late in the second quarter, quarterback Blaine Gabbert led the Titans out of the halftime break as Marcus Mariota stayed in the locker room due to an elbow injury. Washington took over the third quarter through time of possession and adding a field goal to give them a 13-9 edge heading into the fourth quarter. Josh Johnson was 10-16, 127 passing yards, one touchdown, and a 108.1 quarterback rating.

Adrian Peterson helped establish a balanced offensive attack, with 75-yards on 16 carries. In the end, both backup quarterbacks were successful on the night. Gabbert led a go-ahead touchdown late, to give the Titans a three-point lead with just under five minutes to go.

With the pressure on the backs of Josh Johnson and the Redskins offense, they were able to drive it down to midfield, where Johnson throws a game-sealing interception. Adrian Peterson led all rushers with 119 yards rushing on 26 carries, and Jamison Crowder led all Redskins pass-catchers with 78 yards on five catches.
