Redskins Vs. Jaguars - Studs and Duds

Mark Tyler gives you his Studs and Duds of the Redskins game against the Jaguars.

The Redskins went into Jacksonville riding a four game losing streak, but emerged victorious on Sunday, knocking off a struggling Jaguars team 16-13, while keeping their playoff hopes alive. It wasn’t pretty, but the offense controlled time of possession and didn’t turn the ball over, and the defense stepped up in a big way to hold the Jags offense to 192 total yards and no touchdowns.

Below are my Studs and Duds or the game, followed by some notes.

Studs:

Jamison Crowder: Crowder led all receivers with four catches for 46 yards, but it was his concentration on a tipped pass late in the game that made the biggest difference.

Ryan Kerrigan: Kerrigan continued his second half tear, recording six tackles (two for a loss), two sacks, a forced fumble, and multiple quarterback hits. He is now over double digit sacks for the third consecutive season, and four of the last five years. He also tied Charles Mann for second all-time in Redskins history for sacks.

Jonathan Allen: Allen showed up in a BIG way after taking some recent criticism for his play over the past few weeks (I even saw some say he was the most over-rated player on this defense). He had five tackles (three for a loss), two sacks and multiple quarterback hits. It was his best game to date.

Shaun Dion Hamilton: The rookie simply stands out amongst a poor linebacking corps. He flies to the football, shows great instincts and awareness and gets the ball carrier to the ground when he arrives. He still has some rookie moments out there, but make no mistake - this kid is going to be good. He recorded four tackles (a half tackle for a loss), half a sack and a quarterback hit.

Dustin Hopkins: Three for three with a clutch game winner!

Duds:

Byron Marshall: Tell me again why we kept Marshall over Bibbs? He did however make a great tackle on the Jags punt return for a touchdown...just on the WRONG GUY! He had zero carries, and caught just one pass on the day.

Josh Doctson: Did anyone see him out there? I sure didn’t.

Maurice Harris: A dropped pass and a muffed punt (which he luckily recovered). And to think we could have had Simmie Cobbs active instead of him...

Morgan Moses: Morgan Moses’ play just keeps getting worse and worse by the game. Hell, he was playing better last year on two destroyed ankles! The poor blocking, penalties and effort are becoming very hard to watch. And to think, he was the Redskins offensive player of the year last season...wow, how the times have changed!

Luke Bowanko: I know we are REALLY struggling with injuries along the offensive line right now, but there HAS to be a better option than Bowanko. He was absolutely embarrassing on Sunday.

Zac Kerin: I didn’t think it was possible for a lineman to play worse than Bowanko, but Kerin proved me wrong. We would have been better playing Matt Flanagan at guard - at least he would have gotten in the way!

Notes:

- Josh Johnson had a very Alex Smith-like performance Sunday. Many of you won’t like to hear this, but guess what; when we don’t turn the ball over, control the clock and win time of possession, and keep our defense fresh, we win!

- Gotta give credit to Jeremy Sprinkle for making a few key grabs in this game, but he was destroyed on some blocking attempts, and had a costly penalty.

- Vernon Davis has definitely lost a step, and his inability to come down with contested catches is a concern.
