One of the Panthers top linebackers will miss the rest of the reason with a shoulder injury
Shaq Thompson has been placed on injured reserve following an unspecified shoulder injury. I wouldn’t read too much into this as a “season ending injury.” There are two weeks left in the season and any minor nick could outlast what is left of 2018.
Thompson started eleven games for the Panthers this season and appeared in all 14. He will finish the season with 50 tackle, three-and-a-half sacks, and one forced fumble,
Thompson has a shoulder injury. The corresponding move is to promote QB Kyle Allen to the active roster, where he'll back up Taylor Heinicke this Sunday.

Placing Thompson on injured reserve has allowed the Panthers to promote quarterback Kyle Allen from the practice squad. Now the Panthers have a back-up plan for Taylor Heinicke in case Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons goes horribly wrong. Speaking of plans that can go horribly wrong, the Panthers still have not placed Cam Newton on injured reserve.
Allen has been on and off the Panthers’ practice squad throughout the 2018 season and is not expected to serve in any plans that don’t involve hammers and broken glass. The Panthers will hopefully weather the rest of the season with Heinicke as the starter.
