Philadelphia Eagles news and links for 12/11/18.
Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links ...
Sidney Jones’ recurring injury further clouds Eagles’ messy cornerback situation - Inquirer
The biggest question right now is Jones. He oozed with potential when the Eagles drafted him in the second round in 2017. He was expected to be a first-round pick before he tore his Achilles tendon at his pro day, and the Eagles were willing to remain patient during what his essentially a redshirt year as a rookie while Jones got healthy. Owner Jeffrey Lurie said it was a worthwhile gamble because Jones could become a “premier cornerback.” But Jones has seesawed in and out of the lineup this season because of injury. He missed time during the offseason, then injured his hamstring during an Oct. 11 game against the Giants. He returned after one month, but he injured the hamstring again in his first game back on Nov. 18. He missed a game, played last week against Washington without issue, before another injury in the first half on Sunday. He tried playing in the second half, but it was clear he was not right. The Cowboys knew it, too, targeting the wide receivers Jones covered until the training staff pulled him. “They could see I couldn’t run,” said Jones, who added it’s “real frustrating” because the injury “lingers.”
NFC Playoff Picture: Eagles get help in wild card race with Vikings losing to Seahawks - BGN
The Philadelphia Eagles received some help in the NFC playoff picture on Monday night. The Minnesota Vikings losing to the Seattle Seahawks increases the Eagles’ chances of earning a wild card spot. Let’s take an updated look at the standings.
At the Podium #14: Why, Doug? Why? - BGN Radio
Three fresh press conference on the docket in this one, including Doug Pederson after the game, Carson Wentz chiming in about his performance, and Pederson again after having the night to sleep on some of the questionable decisions made. Powered by SBNation and Bleeding Green Nation.
The Day After - Iggles Blitz
Give Dallas their share of credit, but this was more on the Eagles. Wentz didn’t play well. The OL was sloppy on some plays. Pederson had some calls that were less than ideal. Skill players weren’t making plays. You’d have to dissect it play by play to know who to blame for that particular moment. It is starting to feel like the offense won’t get solved this year and will be more of an offseason project.
Eagle Eye: A Drive-By-Drive Analysis Of The Offense - PE.com
The Eagles didn’t make enough plays to win the game on Sunday on either side of the ball. That much is clear. There were certainly bright spots (mostly in the second half of the fourth quarter), but we still saw too much of the same issues that have plagued the offense throughout most of the 2018 campaign. The Eagles were 1-for-9 on third down. The run game was inconsistent. Both of those things resulted in an extremely lopsided time of possession battle that had the Eagles holding on to the football for 23 fewer minutes than the Cowboys. Let’s go to the film and detail the issues they faced through the majority of the afternoon and see how the offense got jump-started late in the game.
Malcolm Jenkins: Change takes time, but the Eagles star is in it for the long haul - The Athletic
There are a few buzz phrases written on a miniature whiteboard in Jenkins’ locker at the Eagles’ training facility. Some are football specific, like “Eyes vs. Run” and “Tackle w/ speed” and “Physicality!” There are also more personal reminders like “Mind + Body!” and “Be Intentional!” The most eye-catching one says “Die to yourself daily!” “That just means whenever I’m not feeling it, I’m not in a good mood, I just gotta … die,” Jenkins explains. “And let those feelings die towards what I’m trying to get accomplished. Gotta die to myself … for what I’m trying to get accomplished. I need that reminder sometimes.”
Angelo Cataldi: The Eagles never really had a chance this year - PhillyVoice
For reasons that only he can explain, Pederson thought it was a good idea to revel in last season instead of preparing for this one, decorating the locker room with posters and mementos of 2017. He actually declared, after the Eagles blew a 17-point lead to Carolina: “The pressure’s off.” The pressure is never off a team defending a championship. He knew that. In the end, quarterback Carson Wentz was not as good this year, the offensive line took a big step backward, the defense was less reliable in big moments, help from special teams was pretty much non-existent and the coach was far less creative and surprisingly less bold. Other than Zach Ertz, not a single player exceeded expectations this season.
Doug Pederson’s struggles at heart of disappointing season - NCBSP
If you win a Super Bowl, you’re an elite team with elite players and elite coaches and you don’t find yourself sitting 6-7 and searching for answers with three weeks to go. And there’s no one easy reason the Eagles find themselves likely to go down as one of the bigger disappointments among Super Bowl champions throughout history. Carson Wentz is clearly not all the way back physically. The injuries that have decimated the defense can’t be ignored. The losses of Frank Reich and John DeFilippo hurt a lot. But ultimately it all goes back to Doug Pederson. He’s just been a bad coach this year.
On one-year anniversary of Wentz’s injuries, script still evolving - ESPN
It’s hard to say exactly how much of that should be placed at the feet of Wentz. He is coming off a major injury that sidelined him until Week 3, after all, and didn’t have the benefit of a full offseason to reintegrate. Injuries hit running back and the offensive line pretty good. And the coaching has not done the offense many favors, with the game plan falling flat more times than not. Still, Wentz is considered a star, and stars are expected to rise above the adversity and lift their teams with them, no matter how hard they scream and kick.
14th Sunday becomes the most-watched since 2016 - PFT
Overall, the three networks carrying Sunday games saw an eight-percent increase in overnight ratings. The FOX rating for Eagles-Cowboys was flat in comparison to last year’s Eagles-Rams game in the same spot. The NBC rating for Rams-Bears beat last year’s Week 14 Ravens-Steelers game by 12 percent, peaking at 14.2.
Which NFC team is the favorite now? - SB Nation
The New Orleans Saints are back in the No. 1 spot in the NFC after a Sunday Night Football loss for the Los Angeles Rams. Jared Goff, Todd Gurley, and the rest of one of the most prolific offenses in NFL history of the Rams looked hopeless in a 15-6 loss to the Bears. It’s not a devastating defeat for the Rams, who already have the NFC West title and still have a two-game lead in the race for a first-round bye. But it did show that the NFC isn’t as top heavy as it once looked. The top seeds in the NFC will still likely belong to the Saints and the Rams, who have 11 wins each — two more than any other team. But after looking like the clear-cut best teams in the conference for most of the season, the gap is closing.
