Sidney Jones’ recurring injury further clouds Eagles’ messy cornerback situation - Inquirer
The biggest question right now is Jones. He oozed with potential when the Eagles drafted him in the second round in 2017. He was expected to be a first-round pick before he tore his Achilles tendon at his pro day, and the Eagles were willing to remain patient during what his essentially a redshirt year as a rookie while Jones got healthy. Owner Jeffrey Lurie said it was a worthwhile gamble because Jones could become a “premier cornerback.” But Jones has seesawed in and out of the lineup this season because of injury. He missed time during the offseason, then injured his hamstring during an Oct. 11 game against the Giants. He returned after one month, but he injured the hamstring again in his first game back on Nov. 18. He missed a game, played last week against Washington without issue, before another injury in the first half on Sunday. He tried playing in the second half, but it was clear he was not right. The Cowboys knew it, too, targeting the wide receivers Jones covered until the training staff pulled him. “They could see I couldn’t run,” said Jones, who added it’s “real frustrating” because the injury “lingers.”

Give Dallas their share of credit, but this was more on the Eagles. Wentz didn’t play well. The OL was sloppy on some plays. Pederson had some calls that were less than ideal. Skill players weren’t making plays. You’d have to dissect it play by play to know who to blame for that particular moment. It is starting to feel like the offense won’t get solved this year and will be more of an offseason project.

Some are football specific, like “Eyes vs. Run” and “Tackle w/ speed” and “Physicality!” There are also more personal reminders like “Mind + Body!” and “Be Intentional!” The most eye-catching one says “Die to yourself daily!” “That just means whenever I’m not feeling it, I’m not in a good mood, I just gotta … die,” Jenkins explains. “And let those feelings die towards what I’m trying to get accomplished. Gotta die to myself … for what I’m trying to get accomplished. I need that reminder sometimes.”

If you win a Super Bowl, you’re an elite team with elite players and elite coaches and you don’t find yourself sitting 6-7 and searching for answers with three weeks to go. It’s hard to say exactly how much of that should be placed at the feet of Wentz. He is coming off a major injury that sidelined him until Week 3, after all, and didn’t have the benefit of a full offseason to reintegrate. Injuries hit running back and the offensive line pretty good. And the coaching has not done the offense many favors, with the game plan falling flat more times than not. Still, Wentz is considered a star, and stars are expected to rise above the adversity and lift their teams with them, no matter how hard they scream and kick.

The FOX rating for Eagles-Cowboys was flat in comparison to last year’s Eagles-Rams game in the same spot. The NBC rating for Rams-Bears beat last year’s Week 14 Ravens-Steelers game by 12 percent, peaking at 14.2.

The New Orleans Saints are back in the No. 1 spot in the NFC after a Sunday Night Football loss for the Los Angeles Rams. Jared Goff, Todd Gurley, and the rest of one of the most prolific offenses in NFL history of the Rams looked hopeless in a 15-6 loss to the Bears. It’s not a devastating defeat for the Rams, who already have the NFC West title and still have a two-game lead in the race for a first-round bye. But it did show that the NFC isn’t as top heavy as it once looked. The top seeds in the NFC will still likely belong to the Saints and the Rams, who have 11 wins each — two more than any other team. But after looking like the clear-cut best teams in the conference for most of the season, the gap is closing.
