The ESPN draftnik sees the Bills providing a boost to their offensive line
With only three more weeks left in the regular season and the Buffalo Bills sitting with a record of 4-9, it’s clear the team will have a bevy of offseason needs. Most of those needs center on the team’s anemic, 31st-ranked offense. Currently, the team is in possession of the 6th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, which presents a golden opportunity to plug up noticeable holes at wide receiver, center, guard, offensive tackle or even tight end to restock this team with some talent.
The first mock draft from ESPN’s Todd McShay has the team doing just that (subscription required). With the team staying put at the 6th pick, McShay has the team picking arguably the most accomplished offensive lineman in the upcoming class.
6. Buffalo Bills
Jonah Williams, OT, Alabama*
When you draft a franchise quarterback, you better keep him upright. Williams is a plug-and-play option with quick feet and has the versatility to play anywhere on either side of the offensive line in front of 2018 No. 7 pick Josh Allen.
This won’t be the last time you see Williams’s named tied to the Bills, and it’s for a couple of reasons. For one, offensive line improvement is a desperate need for Buffalo and Williams is, by most accounts, a slam-dunk prospect. He’s a four-year starter at Alabama, which makes him one of the most battle-tested prospects in the nation. Williams has not given up a sack all season and has only allowed nine total pressures. Second, there’s always that Brian Daboll connection. The Bills offensive coordinator coached Williams in that same capacity during the 2017 college football season.
Of course, the Bills already have a decent left tackle in Dion Dawkins but, if the team were to draft Williams, they would have the luxury of deciding whether to start Williams at left tackle and move Dawkins to right tackle, or just keep Williams at right tackle. Either way, the pick would give the team two great bookends at the position for years to come.
MRW’s take:
The first five picks are all defense: Nick Bosa, Rashan Gary, Quinnen Williams, Clelin Ferrell, and Dexter Lawrence. If it shakes out this way, teams could also be calling the Bills to trade up and get Oregon QB Justin Herbert before the Jacksonville Jaguars are on the clock. That presents an ideal scenario in this draft for a trade down proposition that nets an extra premium pick for Buffalo to fill another hole on their roster. Could be a win-win.
