Wisconsin had a fantastic offensive line in 2018. Will the OL-needy Giants shop there in the draft?
As of this point in the offseason -- long before free agency opens -- the New York Giants have glaring needs from the center position right on their offensive line.
So, as it stands now, they have three positions to figure out before the start of the 2019 NFL season. The Giants could re-sign Jamon Brown, who they acquired mid-season, and hope that improved play at center and right tackle will lead to improved play from their right guard. However, they could also look to find a long-term solution for the position in the 2019 NFL Draft.
If so, they could look at Wisconsin right guard Beau Benzschawel (pronounced Ben-shawl). Benzschawel is an old-school Wisconsin offensive lineman who could appeal to the Giants’ old-school general manager. Much like the rest of Wisconsin’s draft-eligible offensive linemen, Benzschawel is worth keeping an eye on for Giants’ fans.

Pros
- Nasty offensive lineman. Consistently looks to “finish” blocks and give defenders something to remember him by.
- Creates movement in the run game.
- Plays with good leverage and a wide base.
- Sets a good depth for the pocket in pass protection.
- Uses hands well to keep defenders off of him.
- Able to anchor against power.
- Consistently looks for work as a blocker.
Cons
- Might be limited to a man-gap run scheme.
- Seems a bit slow off the snap.
- Seems mechanical as a puller or blocking at the second level.
- Balance is a bit of an issue -- winds up on the ground a bit too often.
- A “guard only” prospect at the next level.

Does He Fit The Giants?
Whether or not Benzschawel fits the Giants largely depends on what they are looking for at right guard and whether or not they re-sign Jamon Brown.
Brown was a clear upgrade over Patrick Omameh at the position, but still had his struggles throughout the second half of the season.
If the Giants don’t believe that improved play at center and right tackle will help Brown to play better, and are looking for a people-moving guard who can act as an anvil to Will Hernandez’s hammer, then it makes sense for them to give Benzschawel a look. He isn’t likely to light up the 2019 NFL Scouting combine, and probably won’t be considered “scheme diverse.” It wouldn’t be surprising to see him slip some in the draft, and he could present solid value early on Day 3 of the draft.
